Choosing a Major
- Do not force a decision.
If you are uncertain, explore your options. Sample widely to test your interests and aptitudes. In fulfilling the General Education requirements, you have an excellent opportunity to explore and sample courses from a variety of departments and disciplines, while also broadening your educational horizons. - The choice of a major should be your own.
It's your degree, therefore it's your major. Discussion with parents, friends, and people employed in your field of interest can provide useful information, but in the end, it's your choice. Regular consultation between you and your advisor can provide you with an opportunity to clarify your goals and objectives. - Base your decisions on a frank assessment of your aptitudes, interests, and personality.
Personal satisfaction is a very important consideration. What major do you like most? What major will be suitable to you? What major best allows you to pursue personal, academic, and career interests? - Take Advantage of Services and Resources.
The Office of Career Services allows you to explore career areas and majors, including through a computerized career guidance system. Begin career explorations as a freshman. Don't wait! - Choosing a Major and State Financial Aid Eligibility.
From an academic standpoint, we recommend that you declare a major by the beginning of your junior year. This insures reasonable opportunity for you to complete your degree requirements on schedule. From a financial standpoint, declaring a major by your junior year is required by the State Education Department to remain eligible for TAP or any other New York state financial aid. However, the policy does not preclude a subsequent change of major. Yes, it is okay if you change your mind.
Major Requirements*
When you have decided on a major, be sure you understand its requirements.
For example, you may need to take a number of prerequisite or
corequisite courses. These are courses which, while not
necessarily in the major, provide a broad base of knowledge in
support of the area. Check these program requirements in
the Undergraduate
Studies Catalog.
Remember, you are ultimately responsible for making sure all your degree requirements are met.
