Liberal Arts Health Science Program
The liberal arts program does not include specific prerequisite courses, but students are encouraged to study in areas such as biology, psychology, anthropology, sociology, economics political science and philosophy. To earn a degree in the health science liberal arts program, students are required to take 30 credits of health science by advisement. Many students in the liberal arts program have a second major (e.g. elementary education, physical education) and/or use the degree as preparation for graduate education.Within the broad framework of the liberal arts program, students can select from among several tracks, including:
- General Liberal Arts/Elementary Education
- Health Care Administration
- Alcohol/Substance Abuse Studies
- Double major in Health Science and Recreation and Leisure Studies
Required Health Science Core Courses Credits HLS 301: Health Behaviors and Wellness 3 HLS 306: Contemporary Issues in Health 3 HLS 488: Applied Biostatistics and Epidemiology 3 Total: 9 II. In addition, at least ONE course from each group is required (Total = 15 credits):
Group I: Consumer and Community Health Credits HLS 303: Environmental Health or HLS 475: Computer Applications in Health Total: 3
Group II: Mental and Emotional Health Credits HLS 312: Mental Health or HLS 471: Child and Adolescent Stress or HLS 423: Theories of Addiction Total: 3
Group III: Substance Use and Abuse Credits HLS 409: Intro. To Psychoactive Substance Use and Abuse or HLS 418: Alcohol Use and Abuse or HLS 445: Psychopharmacology of Alcohol and Substance Use & Abuse Total: 3
Group IV: Family Life/Growth and Development Credits HLS 314: Family Life Science or HLS 419: Human Sexuality Total: 3
Group V: Personal Health/Disease Prevention Credits HLS 311: Nutrition or HLS 426: HIV/AIDS: Issues and Implications Total: 3 III. HLS Electives by Advisement : 6 credits
TOTAL CREDITS: 30The Department of Health Science has a professional responsibility to deny admission or continuation in any of its undergraduate or graduate programs to any student whose level of performance and/or personal characteristics do not adquately meet academic professional or ethical standards.
