Professor Eddie S. Glaude Jr., the Chair of the Center for African American Studies and the William S. Tod Professor of Religion and African American Studies at Princeton University will give the College's 2011 Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Lecture. A frequent commentator on radio and television, Glaude has also published several books. The latest, In a Shade of Blue: Pragmatism and the Politics of Black America, has received wide acclaim. Cornel West has called Glaude "the towering intellectual of his generation."
The lecture will take place at 7 p.m. Feb. 8 in the Seymour College Union Ballroom.
Two AAS professors will have books published in the coming months.
Dr. John Marah’s novel, Dining and Dancing with the Devils has been accepted for publication by Africa World Press, Inc. and The Red Sea Press, Inc. It will be published in the spring of 2011. Dr. Michael Boston recently had two books published. They are: The Business Strategy of Booker T. Washington published in August of 2010 by the University Press of Florida and Dr. Skinner’s Remarkable School for “Colored Deaf, Dumb and Blind Children” 1857-1860 published September 2010 by Museum of Disability History
Michael Boston also recently presented at two conferences. He spoke on “The School for the Deaf, Dumb and Blind Children” during the 3rd Biennial Eastern Regional Black Deaf Advocates Conference held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, August 6-8, 2010. He also discussed “The Negro Farmer’s Conference: Helping Those Near and Far” during the 95th Annual Association for the Study of African American Life and History held in Raleigh, North Carolina, September 29 to October 3, 2010.
Marah spoke at the Kwame Nkrumah International Conference, at the Richmond Campus, Kwantlen Polytechnic University, British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada, on August 21, 2010. His topic was “Pan-African Education: From the Temples of Egypt to Emperor Haile Selassie’s Pan-African University.”
For the last 15 years, Dr. Marah has been taking students on a trip to Ghana during the winter session to learn about the country. In collaboration with the University of Ghana, students engage in a mixture of classwork and study in the field, and mix in some time for sightseeing as well.
