Freshman Admission

Admission to SUNY College at Brockport is selective and competitive. Less than half the freshmen that apply are accepted. In making admissions decisions, we consider the strength of your academic program, course grades, class rank, letters of recommendation, standardized test scores, and any additional information that you provide to support your application for admission.

Applying
SUNY Brockport uses the SUNY application, which is available in high school guidance offices and online.

We encourage you to work with your school counselor when preparing to apply to colleges. SUNY Brockport operates on a rolling admissions basis, which means that we make decisions on applications as they become complete. You can check the status of your application by clicking here.

Admissions Process
Once an application is received, it will be reviewed to determine if it is complete. If it is incomplete, a letter will be sent to the student requesting the missing information. Once the application is complete, it will be reviewed and a decision letter will be mailed to the applicant.

For those offered admission
For admitted students, tuition and housing deposit information is included with the acceptance packet. Please pay close attention to the deposit deadline. Admitted students will also receive information from departments on campus including their academic major, Honors Program, Delta College, McNair and more.

Beginning in May and June, deposited freshman will receive information regarding freshmen registration, housing options, meal plans, orientation, and more. Deposited students can also learn a lot about what to expect during the freshman year from the First Year Experience program.

New freshman will want to submit their final high school transcripts, official AP and IB scores, and transcripts from any colleges they may have earned credit from. Freshmen should do so as soon as they are available in order to complete the admissions application and assist in the freshman registration process.

For those not offered admission
Unfortunately, not all applicants are offered admission as a freshman. Admission to SUNY Brockport is competitive and less than 50% of applicants are offered admission. For students who are not offered admission and still seek to enroll at SUNY Brockport, we encourage them to complete one year (minimum 24 transferable college credits) at a 2-year or community college and then apply as a transfer student for the following year. Students who have not been offered admission as a freshman applicant for fall will only be considered as a transfer applicant for the following fall semester and beyond.

SAT's
At this time, SUNY College at Brockport, like many other colleges, will continue to place most of its standardized test emphasis on the Verbal and Math sections of the SAT. These sections will continue to play an important role during the admission and scholarship consideration process. On the new SAT, these sections are known as Critical Reading (Verbal) and Mathematical Reasoning (Math). Early research and data suggests that the mean scores have an extremely high correlation to the mean Verbal and Math scores on the old SAT.

SUNY Brockport supports the new Writing section of the SAT and recognizes the importance of writing skills at both the collegiate and professional levels. These scores will provide additional information during the admissions review process. Once substantial data is available and means and norms are compiled for the writing section of the new SAT, SUNY Brockport will place increasing emphasis on the writing and overall SAT results.

EOP
The Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) assists economically and educationally disadvantaged students by providing academic advisement, college adjustment, financial aid, personal/interpersonal counseling, career assistance and tutoring.

Interested students should contact their school counselor to discuss academic and economic criteria and to determine potential eligibility. EOP students must meet income guidelines set by New York State. We use income categories A and B&C.

Honors and Academics
Unique opportunities are available to high achieving students including our Honors Program, Delta College and our extensive scholarship program.

International Baccalaureate Credits - SUNY Brockport will award six (6) credits for scores of 5 or higher on Higher Level examinations only. No credit will we awarded for Standard Level Examinations though students may, at the discretion of the appropriate department, petition for credit-by-examination. IB students are encouraged to consider applying to our Honors and Delta College programs.

SUNY Brockport also accepts AP credit with scores of 3 or higher.

Scholarships
SUNY Brockport offers extensive freshmen academic scholarships. The scholarship criterion includes GPA, standardized test scores, and high school class rank. Please see scholarship descriptions for deadline dates.
