Second Baccalaureate Degree

Announcement regarding The College at Brockport’s Physical Education transfer applications

We are no longer accepting Physical Education transfer applications for fall 2008.  Applicants who have applied for fall 2008 for Physical Education and whose file is incomplete have until Friday, April 18, 2008 at 9:30 am to complete their application to be considered for fall.  We will begin to review spring 2009 applications in August.

SUNY Brockport graduates and graduates from accredited institutions are eligible to earn a second baccalaureate degree in a program leading to a different academic major. To be awarded a second degree, all program requirements must be met and a significant amount of course work beyond your first degree requirements must be completed.

Degree Requirements

1. Students pursuing a second undergraduate degree must complete a minimum of 30 semester hours in addition to the hours required for the first degree. The College Residency Policy requires that a minimum of 30 credits be completed at SUNY Brockport. The residency requirement includes completion of at least 15 credits needed for a major, and if pursuing a minor or certification program, then you must complete at least half of those credits required for the minor/certification program at SUNY Brockport also.

2. Students must fulfill all prerequisites, corequisites and major requirements for the second degree program, and complete General Education, liberal arts, and upper-division requirements in effect at the date of matriculation in the second degree program. Transfer credit may be used to fulfill these requirements.

3. The minimum GPA for consideration for admission to the college is 2.5.

Application Procedures

All materials, including the application and all transcripts must be on file in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions by December 1 if applying for the spring semester and by August 1 if applying for the fall semester.

Students who completed their first bachelor's degree or were ever matriculated at SUNY Brockport apply for readmission using the Second Degree Readmission Application and pay the $40 application fee to SUNY Brockport. Students who completed their first bachelor's degree at another college or university must use the SUNY undergraduate application and pay the $40 application fee to SUNY. All second degree students are classified as matriculated undergraduates and are billed accordingly.

Second degree applicants must send official transcripts from every college/university attended. This is necessary regardless of the number of credits earned, even if the information appears on another institution's transcript. An official college transcript verifying completion of the baccalaureate degree must be on file in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions before an application will be reviewed.

Students may be eligible for financial aid. The Financial Aid Office should be consulted for further details at (585) 395-2501 or through e-mail at finaid@brockport.edu.

Programs of Study

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions admits applicants to the College and not to a major. A separate application or pre-requisite courses may be required for admission to a major. Check the department's website to determine if your intended major has requirements for admission to the major.

Childhood & Adolescence Education Certification

Students interested in Childhood and Adolescence Education Certification (excluding Health Science and Physical Education) must submit the Education application in addition to the application for admission to the College. The Education application deadline is February 15th for fall enrollment and September 15th for spring enrollment. Applicants need to be accepted to the college by the Education application deadline. Please note: The certification program is not a major and must be completed in addition to your second degree major. Please visit the Department of Education and Human Development's website for a list of appropriate academic majors.

If you intend on pursing Adolescence Education Certification (5th - 12th grades), please click here for additional certification options.

Nursing

All students pursuing the BSN should contact the Department of Nursing at (585) 395-2355 prior to applying to the College. Admission to the major requires a separate application to the Nursing department. Nursing applications must be submitted by January 20th of the year the student is seeking admission to the nursing department. Please note: there are pre-requisite courses for admission to the major.

Social Work

Admission to the Social Work major requires submission of the Social Work application to the Social Work Department by March 15th. This is in addition to the application for admission to the College. Please note: there are pre-requisite courses for admission to the major. Admission to the Social Work major is for fall only. Students interested in entering the College in spring will be considered Social Work Intents.

Concentrations

Several majors at SUNY Brockport offer concentrations within the major. We encourage you to visit the department's website and notify the Office of Undergraduate Admissions of your intended concentration.

Registration

Admitted second degree students register at the Student Orientation, Advisement and Registration (SOAR) program or open registration. They will be classified as seniors.
