Frequently Asked QuestionsDo you accept AP credit? Yes. We will grant credit for scores of 3 or higher. Accepted students need to submit official score reports to receive the credit. Can I have a car on campus? All freshmen are allowed to have a car on campus. Parking is provided to students at one of the many lots on campus. If you won't have a car, don't worry-we provide a campus shuttle service into town and around campus. How big is SUNY Brockport? SUNY Brockport has an undergraduate enrollment of about 6,700 students, and approximately 1,900 graduate students. About 2,500 students live on campus, while another 1,500 live in the immediate area. A number of students also live and commute from the greater Rochester area. Where is Brockport? Brockport is located in western New York state. We are 16 miles west of Rochester, and 40 miles east of Buffalo. Brockport is a small town of about 10,000 residents, located on the historic Erie Canal. What is the average class size? The average class size is about 25 students. Depending on your major, your classes may be smaller. Our classes are taught by professors who are dedicated to their field and to teaching students. Ninety percent of our faculty hold the highest degree in their field, so you'll be sure to interact with people who have in-depth knowledge of their subject matter. Do students need to live on campus? Freshmen must live on campus for their first year, unless they live within 25 miles of the college and are living with a parent or legal guardian. We have four residence halls for freshmen; all residence halls are equipped with high-speed Internet access. Transfer students are not required to live on campus, but housing is available for those who request it on a first-come, first-served basis. What is there to do on campus besides attending classes? SUNY Brockport offers a variety of social activities. We offer 23 varsity sports, all at the Division III level. We also have over 60 clubs and organizations for students to participate in, mostly sponsored by Brockport Student Government (BSG), rated the number one student government within the SUNY system this past year. BSG invites speakers to campus, hosts conferences, concerts, and provides funding for campus activities. Previous speakers include Maya Angelou, David Spade, and former Attorney General Janet Reno. How do students feel about the campus? In a recent SUNY survey of four-year college campuses, SUNY Brockport ranked number one in a number of areas. The student survey showed that Brockport students were more satisfied with dining services, computer facilities, and the Brockport Student Government than students on any other SUNY campus! Will you feel the same way? The best way to find out is by visiting the campus. How do I arrange a campus visit? The campus visit is probably the single-most important part
of your college search. It's the way you really get a feel for the campus
environment and find out if the college is a good fit for you. This year,
you will have a wide variety of opportunities to discover SUNY Brockport.
We encourage you and your family to see the college and meet some of the
people who teach, coach, and advise our students. We offer tours at 11:30
am and 2 pm Monday through Friday while classes are in session, and have
information sessions at 1 pm. For a complete list of available tour dates
and times and to sign up online, visit http://www.brockport.edu/admissions/visit.html.
Or call our office at (585) 395-2751. We hope that during your visit one
thing will become clear: Student success is our highest priority! Q: I am applying for childhood education, but when I log on, it says I am undeclared. Why is that? A: Childhood education, as well as Adolescent education, is a certification program at SUNY Brockport, not an academic major. Students pursuing teacher certification must complete an appropriate academic major in addition to the requirements of the teacher certification program. A list of majors students can pursue for childhood and adolescent education is available on the Department of Education and Human Development’s website. While we don’t take an applicant’s intended major into consideration when making a decision, you can e-mail us with your intended major at admit@brockport.edu. Comments or questions? Contact Undergraduate Admissions. |
