Campus Audit of Civic Engagement 2003-2004
American Democracy ProjectWe first asked faculty and staff about their perceptions of the relevance of civic engagement to higher education. Broad agreement on this point would seem to be a pre-requisite for involvement in the American Democracy Project. The results are encouraging. 93.0% of the undergraduate faculty and 82.6% of the staff answered that they “agree” or “strongly agree” that a college education should strive to change student values, goals and attitudes regarding civic engagement. An even higher proportion of respondents, 97.7% and 97.8% of faculty and staff, respectively, agreed that a college education can shape civic engagement-related values, goals and attitudes.
