2005-2006 Projects
- Joint Committee on Academic Integrity
This task force will develop an honor code to be adopted by SUNY Brockport students. Many other ADP colleges have developed honor codes as a way of communicating to students how they are expected to behave as citizens of a campus community. This activity will address the moral dimension of civic engagement.
- Freshman Council
The Freshman Council will meet monthly and be composed of 35-40 students with at least one from each APS section. The council will address issues faced by first-year students and will advise and work with other campus groups such as the Faculty Senate and BSG. It is the hope that the students on this council will serve as campus leaders during their time at SUNY Brockport.
- Summer Reading Program
ADP will continue to sponsor the Summer Reading Program (SRP) and the events planned around the 2005-2006 book selection, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. Curious Incident fits nicely with the goals of ADP as it is written from the perspective of an individual with a disability as he struggles to find his place in society.
- Village-to-Village
This activity will build on the fundraising efforts undertaken in Spring 2005 for the victims of the Tsunami disaster. The campus will continue to collaborate with Rev. Sinnathamby Thevanesan (Pastor Theva) of the Brockport United Methodist Church, the village of Brockport, and the Town of Sweden in the effort to help the Tirukkovil Village Orphanage in Sri Lanka. One possible Village-to-Village project is a citizen exchange where individuals from Tirukkovil visit Brockport with several SUNY Brockport students going to Sri Lanka.
- Alliance of Universities for Democracy (AUDEM) UPEC Project
AUDEM is a network of European colleges and universities similar to the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU). As the sponsor of the nationwide ADP project, AASCU has partnered with AUDEM in a project called University Partnerships in Education and Citizenship (UPEC). UPEC is designed to bring ADP colleges in the United States into contact with AUDEM institutions in Europe. The goal of the project is to facilitate cross-continental conversations about the nature and responsibilities of democratic citizenship. SUNY Brockport will pursue UPEC in partnership with other local ADP campuses SUNY Geneseo and SUNY Cortland
- Campus Compact (Service Learning)
SUNY Brockport is a member of New York Campus Compact (NYCC). NYCC is an association of college and university presidents and their campuses committed to promoting active citizenship as an aim of higher education. NYCC provides member institutions with assistance in developing service learning programs on the college campus. The ADP will utilize these resources to begin an effort to increase the capacity of SUNY Brockport faculty, staff, and students who desire to pursue service learning. NYCC’s Commission on Civic Education is also planning an annual student conference on civic engagement. SUNY Brockport students will be identified to help plan the first conference scheduled for Spring 2006.
- Service Requirement for Graduation Task Force
This task force will be convened to investigate the possibility of requiring all students to complete some type and amount of service as a graduation requirement. The task force will investigate the feasibility of such a requirement and propose a plan for implementation if a service requirement is found to be feasible.
- Citizenship Minor Task Force
Another task force will address the development of a minor in citizenship. Those involved in the citizenship minor task force will also discuss team-teaching and other collaborative teaching opportunities that address ADP themes.
