Interdisciplinary Arts for Children Program

Admission to the Major

Before gaining admission to SUNY Brockport, we invite you to visit the Arts for Children Interdisciplinary Program office to inquire about the program and visit the campus. You may direct your questions or set up an appointment with the program secretary at (585) 395-5279 or e-mail: At the same time, please inquire about specific audition or portfolio requirements that may be needed for your specialty selection (art, dance, music or theatre).

Admission to the Arts for Children major requires students to pass a set of screening criteria. Abilities, dispositions and motivation of students requesting to enter the major are assessed during an informal initial interview with the Arts for Children program director. This also begins the advising process for those intending to enter the major. Prospective majors must successfully complete prerequisite coursework (with a grade of “C” or better in each course) before officially gaining entry as an Arts for Children major.

For those planning to become classroom teachers, application to the teacher certification program through the Department of Education and Human Development is usually made at the end of the freshman year.
