Alumni Spotlight

Neal Carlson '97
Major: Communications
What you are doing now: I've been pursuing music since graduation. I put together a rock-n-roll band called Bona Roba in 2001 and we've just released our debut album. I recently appeared on the CBS show, Rockstar: INXS.
Favorite class at Brockport: Video Editing
Favorite professor at Brockport: Arden Bucholz
Most memorable Brockport moment: 10th floor Mortimer, sophomore year. An entire year of sing-alongs in the resident hall lounge.
Most interesting life experience: Studying abroad (London) was up there, but it may get knocked down to 2nd place in the coming months. Having a baby and being on Rockstar: INXS should take first.
Most famous person I have met: Dave Navarro (guitarist)
Last book read: The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon
CD most likely to find in your stereo: Guns 'n Roses Appetite for Destruction, The Rollings Stones Exile on Main St., Candi Staton Candi Staton, an unbelievable album.
Favorite movie: I can't name one but some of my favorites are One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Swingers, Escape from Alcatraz, The Ice Storm, The Hours, Dog Day Afternoon, Gimme Shelter and Shaun of the Dead
Favorite vacation spot: Santa Ynez, California
Family (spouse, children): My beautiful wife, Kathleen. We met in '98 and married in '02. We are expecting our first baby in September. He's not even born yet and he already owns an AC/DC shirt.
What you want to be doing next year: At exactly this time next year, I want to be rocking on the most elaborate stage ever built. I want to emerge out of a 50-foot volcano while fire is being spewed out above the heads of the audience.
What you want to be doing in 20 years: I'd like to be in Italy studying Italian and managing a winery.
Message to the students of today: Use college to tap into your creative side. If you have a talent for art, music, dance, writing etc…go for it. I started playing guitar and singing my freshman year at Brockport. Twelve years later I'm getting a pretty big opportunity to have a career in music. It's tough pursuing the arts as a career, but it's always rewarding.
