Alumni Spotlight

Gordon '60 and Kathryn '61 Jewett

What you are doing now: We are enjoying our new patio home in Spencerport, NY, that was built for us to accommodate our handicaps. We attend ALS and MS support group meetings, family get togethers, enjoy our grandchildren, go out to dinner, read and watch TV, and enjoy all we can. We both try to think positively and plan to stay in our home for quite some time. (Gordon was diagnosed in January of 2003 with ALS, and Kathy has had MS for 35 years). Recently, Gordon received the MDA's 2005 Personal Achievement Award for MDA's Greater Rochester/Finger Lakes Chapter.

Major(s): Health and physical education for both of us.

Favorite class at Brockport: Anatomy and physiology for both of us.

Favorite professor at Brockport: James Fulton

Most memorable Brockport moment: Passing gymnastics for Gordon. Attending Camp Totum for Kathy.

Most interesting life experience: Traveling the InterCoastal Waterway for a year in our sailboat to the Keys in Florida and back. We also went to Kenya, East Africa, for nine weeks in 1967 for a church mission. We took 21 teenagers to live with African teens and helped build four buildings as part of our project.

Most famous person you have met: Arthur Mitchell, who is the founder of the Harlem Ballet.

Last book read: Journey Through Heartsongs by Mattie Stebanek for Gordon and Blindsided by Steve Cohen for Kathy.

CD most likely to find in your stereo: Piano Favorites

Favorite movie: Pretty Woman for Gordon and Sleepless in Seattle for Kathy

Favorite vacation spot: Alaska for Gordon and Marathon, Florida, for Kathy

Family: We have two children - Scott, 42, and Heather, 39. We also have three grandchildren. Quinn, 6, daughter of Heather; and Spencer, 6, and Dylan, 4, sons of Scott.

What you want to be doing next year: To keep working on staying mobile and keeping healthy so we can enjoy life with family and friends.

What you want to be doing in 20 years: Same as above.

Message to the students of today: To become all that you are capable of being, appreciate family and friends, and enjoy life to the fullest.
