If You Don't Have a Job at Graduation
May 2009...
The excitement of graduation is fading and the realization is surfacing. You need to find a job! Don’t panic if you don’t have a job waiting for you. Career Services is here to help!
Temporary and Employment Agencies can offer the foot-in-the-door opportunity you need and can often lead to permanent placement.
Internships after graduation can also get you in the door and put some “hands’ on” experience on your resume. Most internships are unpaid, but they give you the opportunity to showcase your talents. Companies like to hire their interns because they are already familiar with the company and job responsibilities.
Part-time Jobs avoid an employment gap on your resume and helps pay the bills. You also can cobble together more than one part-time position to get your income up. This is called a portfolio career and can be helpful in breaking into a key career you have your heart set on. Many of our teacher candidates do substitute teaching until they can find a permanent position. You can do one part-time position during the day and add something like a restaurant position in the evening. Sometimes getting to your ideal career takes baby steps and innovative thinking.
Networking is a key job-search tool. Utilize our alumni database called Career Connections to talk with an alumnus who has successfully made the transition to a role you want at: http://www.brockport.edu/career/connection.htm or join Linked In: The College at Brockport, State University of New York Alumni Group at http://www.linkedin.com/groups and look for people to talk with in the field you want to work in.
Be sure to also use the Career Services office with locations both on the Brockport campus and downtown Rochester at the MetroCenter. If you cannot get to our sites, or live outside the greater Rochester area, take a look at our website at www.brockport.edu/career to find out what services are available to you as an alumnus. For more info, contact Phyllis Griswold at pgriswol@brockport.edu or call (585) 395-8479.

Landed new job in record time…made relocation dream a reality
“I have great news - I accepted a position as a Change Management Analyst with a health care company. I am excited about the opportunity to move into the health care sector. The key to my job search success was the early support you provided me as a Brockport alumnus when I learned of my imminent lay-off."
“Your encouragement, advice and the assessments we did really helped me emotionally, and gave me a sense of direction and hope. The Brockport alumni career counseling services provided a significant advantage in the early stages of my search, putting me a few steps ahead of my peers on my separation date. I like to think that being ready as early as I was played a role in me landing this position.” – William C. Schlein, B.S. in Mathematics and Computer Science '86, M.A. in Mathematics '87
“I wanted to let you know that I got a Store Manager position in Santa Rosa, CA. You have been helping me with my resume and looking into relocating to California. I truly appreciate all your guidance and encouragement to be persistent. By keeping me motivated, you helped make my dream a reality. Thank you so much for all your help.” – Sasha Gooray, B.S., Women’s Studies ‘05
