Mrs. Karen Mathes is a native of Springwater, NY. Graduating from Wayland Central School in 1983 and attended Monroe Community College for three semesters, later earning an Associate’s degree in Administrative/ Management Studies from Excelsior College 2002.

She enlisted in the New York Army National Guard in 1988, attending Accounting Specialist training at Fort Benjamin Harrison in Indianapolis, Indiana serving in the National Guard until 1994 when she transferred to the United States Army Reserve (USAR) to accept an assignment in the Active Guard and Reserve (AGR) Program as a Personnel Admin Specialist.

She served in the AGR program for 13 years, attaining the rank of Sergeant First Class (SFC), in numerous personnel administration and human resource positions as well as a three year assignment as a Health Care Recruiter. She was deployed to Kuwait 2004 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. In 2007 an opportunity to work for Army ROTC opened at Canisius College, in Buffalo, NY and she was discharged from the AGR program to accept a position as a Human Resources Assistant (HRA). In 2013 her position at Canisius was eliminated and she was transferred to the ROTC program at SUNY Brockport to fill the HRA position. She completed her 20-years of military service in the United States Air Force Reserve, transferring to the Retired Reserve in 2009.

Mrs. Mathes has attended and graduated from the School of Cadet Command – Human Resource Assistant Course, Ft. Knox, KY; Advanced Non-commissioned Officer Course, 42A Human Resources Sergeant; Basic Non-commissioned Officer Course, 75H Admin Sergeant; Army Health Care Recruiter Course; Army Recruiter Course; Primary Leadership Development Courses. Awards include Meritorious Service Medal (2), Army Commendation Medal (6), Army Achievement Medal (3), Global War On Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Army NCO Professional Development Ribbon (3), US Army Recruiter Badge – Gold.
