Greetings! |
|
|
Dr. Francis X. Short, Dean
|
|
As dean of the School of Arts and Performance,
a
school that includes art, dance, communication, arts
for children, physical education and sport, the Visual
Studies Workshop, and theatre, I sometimes hear
people on campus remark, “What an odd collection of
programs to combine in a single administrative unit,”
or, perhaps less kindly, “Who thought that one up?”
So, what do these seemingly diverse
departments
and programs have in common? In my experience,
they have more in common than might initially meet
the eye.

Current interdisciplinary arts for children
major
Melanie Blasucci interned last
summer with Jacque D’Amboise’s famed National Dance
Institute. Says Blasucci, "I used skills learned in
my classes to keep the children actively engaged
while they were learning.”
Melanie wants to work
with special needs children. She will graduate in
May 2006 and get her master’s degree through the
Teaching Fellows Program in New York City.

Brockport's Olympic Connection |
|
|
|
|
According to Assistant Professor of Physical
Education and Sport Cesar Torres, the
Olympic
Games are more than just a gathering of outstanding
international athletes. They are an intersecting of
politics, economics, cultures and social issues from
each of the countries represented. As a protocol
assistant for the National Olympic Committee of
Argentina in the 2004 Games, Torres saw first hand
the complex relationships between athlete, coach
and sponsor. As for the 2006 Games about to get
underway, Torres says he expects the political
maneuvering to continue.

Latonia Phipps "Identity Unmasked... Who 'I' Be"
|
|
In spring 2005, theatre major Latonia ("T")
Phipps traveled to Russia with the National
Theatre
Institute where she experienced a degree of racism
and
sexism she hadn’t found in the States.
That compelled her to create “Identity
Unmasked . . . Who ‘I’ Be.” The 45-minute
work explores her identity as a student, artist
and woman.
Encouraged by
Theatre assistant professor Ruth Childs, Latonia
entered her
work in the Fringe Festival of the American College
Theatre Festival's regional conference where it
received a standing ovation.
Currently interviewing with graduate
programs, Latonia credits the department
and particularly Professor Childs, with
nurturing her passion for
theatre. “After my years at Brockport I realize
I still have a great deal to learn. I am but a toddler
stumbling through this field. However, I’ve taken my
first couple of steps.”
