Dear Friends, Welcome to the inaugural issue of the art departments e-newsletter. We hope this method of communication will help us all reconnect and share our accomplishments with one another. The department knows from the many e-mails, exhibition cards, and notes we receive each month that our alumni are active in their profession, studying for advanced degrees, traveling abroad, raising families and, of course, being resourceful and creative citizens. Stand up and be counted! We want to brag about what you have been up to! So send us your comments, updates and photos. And please forward this newsletter to another art alumnus. Best to you and yours, Jim Morris Interim Chair, Department of Art |

| Assistant Curators Erin Ruscio-Holst and Lisa Efing |
Alternative Girlhood: Diaristic Indulgence and Contemporary Female Artists, features work by 10 established and emerging female creators of graphic novels, comics, and 'zines. Assistant Professor Alisia Chase, with the help of two senior art majors, Erin Ruscio-Holst and Lisa Efing, curated the exhibition. The images, which range from original hand-drawn ink works to a full-sized quilt, illustrate the comically painful and emotionally honest moments that define many young women's lives. You can hear more about the Alternative Girlhood project in a podcast interview from the CINDY Center featuring Alisia Chase. |

| "Psalm 100" by Jennifer Hecker |
Associate Professor Jennifer Hecker completed a sculptural commission in 2004 for Christ Church in Pittsford, NY. This three-part sculpture installation was created of cast and welded bronze. Hecker's work consisted of 100 cast leaves attached to the wall that framed the old door to the church, and a cast bronze branch with birds. At its base is a small bench cast with the same grapevine molding used elsewhere in the church. |

How Much is That Woman in the Window? Manipulation, Commodification, and the Female Nude in Contemporary Art examined how contemporary female artists question societys use of the female body. |

| birdhouse by Kathy Farrell |
A harbinger of the season that will quickly be upon us, The Birdhouse Show, an invitational exhibition of avian ateliers, opens February 28 and runs through March 26. There will be a reception and sale preview on March 3 from 6 to 9 pm. "What is nice about the national response this show has garnered, is that funds raised will be donated, in part, to Habitat for Humanity," said Tim Massey, gallery director and assistant professor of art. |
