Before you explore your area of interest, let me tell you about some of the highlights and changes going on department-wide.

Our most significant news is that we are moving ahead with plans for our new curriculum. We are re-designing the liberal arts major in physical education to become a major in kinesiology. At the same time,we'll have separate majors in physical education teacher education (with an option to minor in adapted physical education), athletic training, exercise physiology and sport management.

This plan allows faculty in each new major the flexibility to provide the best curricula for our students. These changes will be helpful as we pursue national accreditations and will allow room for growth in all areas while also being a boon in marketing to prospective students. We'll keep you apprised as the proposals are sent to the Provost and then to Albany for approval.

Because of the proposals for five new majors, the faculty is also discussing a change in the name of the Department from Physical Education and Sport to something more comprehensive and descriptive of our wider range of majors. Be on the lookout for a new name sometime in the near future.

Other news in the department…Many of you fondly remember our long-time department secretary, Annette Cannioto. Nettie just retired from the College and we’ll miss her. Marsha Moss is the new department secretary and she promises to be equally wonderful. PES continues to be a large and complex department so it takes a special person to keep the main office organized and running smoothly.

So, as you can see, we’re headed for another exciting year in the department. I invite you to read the sections that follow and see specifically what’s going on in each area.
