Greetings from Theatre! |
|
|
Frank Kuhn, Chair, Department of Theatre
|
|
I have just finished my first three semesters as
department chair, and with every week I am more
impressed by the dedication of the faculty, the
talent and motivation of the students, and the
achievements of the department. Having heard from
a
number of alumni and longtime friends of the
department, I am
keenly aware of the debt owed to those people who
established and supported this department over the
past 40 years, and our responsibility to that
legacy. Evaluators who visited the department last
spring noted that, in their estimation, the department
has "a very bright future." We couldn't agree more and
look forward to sharing that future with you through
this newsletter and at theatre events on campus!

Fall Productions |
|
|
Latonia Phipps and Corinne Magin in "A Piece of My Heart"
|
|
This fall we presented two very successful
productions to launch our 2005-2006 season in Tower
Fine Arts Center. The season
opened in October with a powerful production of
A Piece of
My
Heart, a play assembled from the reminiscences
of six
women who served in the Vietnam War. The
production was directed by Richard St. George and
attended by the playwright, Shirley Lauro.

Come to a Performance |
|
|
|
|
Look what's in store for spring 2006! First is
Ted Tally?s gripping
drama Terra Nova, a retelling of explorer
Robert Falcon Scott?s quest to be the first to arrive
at the South Pole. The play is an adventure story
and an exploration of pride, heroism, dedication and
responsibility. Terra Nova opens February 24
and runs through March 4.
Experience a radical change of scenery as the
focus shifts to sunny Monaco for Lucky Stiff
by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen
Flaherty. During this fast-paced, delightful musical
based on The Man Who Broke the Bank at Monte
Carlo, the audience follows a number of comic
characters (one of whom is no longer living) through
a whirlwind tour. Lucky Stiff
plays from April 21 through April 29.

Playwrights on Campus |
|
|
Shirley Lauro
|
|
We've hosted a number of playwrights on campus in
the last 18 months. This past October, Shirley Lauro,
author of A Piece of My Heart, came to
campus for a three-day residency. Ms. Lauro gave a
lecture to the college community on her creative
process and participated in a panel discussion
following a performance.
Ms. Lauro?s residency was
supported by
a $1200 ?Better Community? grant from the
college.

SUNY Brockport Theatre and Geva |
|
|
|
|
We have a newly expanded alliance agreement
between Geva Theatre Center and SUNY Brockport.
The newly revised agreement includes internship
opportunities for Brockport
students at Geva. During the fall semester, the
department sent interns for stage management, company
and front-of-house management, and directing - with
very positive results. Senior Karen Yaneka
reported, "I could never have learned in a classroom
the things I learned at Geva." And sophomore
Michael Sheehan characterized his internship as
"a big commitment" but "well worth it."
This spring, four more interns head to Geva and you
can see some of them in Geva's production of
Inherit the Wind.

New Hearing Assistance in Mainstage |
|
|
Bill and Anne Rock with Department Chair Frank Kuhn
|
|
Thanks to the generosity of Bill and Anne
Rock, the
department has installed a new infrared hearing
assistance system in the Tower Auditorium. The
installation is intended to make the
mainstage shows more accessible to our many
patrons who would otherwise
have difficulty
hearing our performances. Come hear the difference!
We are
most grateful to the Rocks for their generous support.

Kudos all around! |

Theatre Professor Richard St. George in "The Guys"
|
|
Department of Theatre faculty have been busy
around
town recently. This past fall, Richard St.
George
received a rave review
for his work in The Guys at the Downstairs
Cabaret
Theatre in what the Democrat and
Chronicle called "an affecting performance."
