VSW masthead
April 2006
It is with pleasure that we launch the premiere issue of our quarterly e-newsletter. Its purpose is to keep the entire VSW community abreast of ongoing activities. Read about accomplishments and noteworthy events including Afterimage, Artists Workspace, community workshops and the MFA program with SUNY Brockport, exhibitions and screenings and the Research Center.

Just as important as the "news," this e-newsletter expresses our commitment to continue to grow the VSW community. I hope you enjoy it and will respond with your comments and ideas.

Warm regards,

Chris Burnett
MFA Director, Visual Studies Workshop

 Artist in Residence
  Keith Johnson

Keith Johnson joined the VSW community in February as an artist in residence. Keith is a photographer and no stranger to the Workshop, though this is his first residency. Keith used the time at VSW to learn desktop publishing techniques and to make inkjet prints of his photographic series Ground Cover. Thanks to Keith, the community benefitted from his insight and good conversation (as well as his leaving behind a raft of Crane Museo paper!).
Visual Studies Workshop at Scholars' Day
  Scholars Day

MFA Students Luke Strosnider, Tammie Malarich, Marlene Seidman, and Matt Walker will present at SUNY Brockport's Scholars' Day. The panel will present and discuss experimental forms of academic composition explored in Chris Burnett's "Media Culture" course. Their presentation will center around the understanding of the role of the image in society by the direct application of visual skills to the academic content.

In designing the final project, Burnett's course employed W. J. T. Mitchell's concept of the "imagetext" - a composite, synthetic work that gives images and audio-visual signs a primary role along with text. The course encouraged multiple forms of communication - short videos, web pages, cartoons, and artists' books - while insisting on standards of research, argumentation and rigor.

 Upcoming Summer Workshops at VSW
  Summer Workshop brochure

The Summer Institute brochure is out and promises a strong series of workshops for July 2006. Along with our regular offerings, you can find new offerings in Media Literacy Education.

Rich Della Costa and Karen vanMeenan are co-teaching Media Literacy for Teachers. They address the need to understand the language of the moving image and other media to positively enhance the classroom experience. With a focus on student learning styles, participants will view films and videos from the VSW archive, learn about production techniques, analyze music styles and lyrics and strategize how to use these materials in their class rooms.

A related workshop will be offered by Franzie Weldgen entitled Comics and Sequential Art in the Classroom. This workshop will give the ambitious and curious instructor the low-down on integrating the ever-popular and rapidly-recognized comic and sequential art medium in their classroom.

 Historical Processes at VSW
  Historical process photo

Historical processes at VSW work in distinct proximity with advanced imaging technologies. The core of the movement is the Laboratorium founded by VSW graduates Heather Wetzel and Jenn Libby. The studio is dedicated to preserving and promoting photographic techniques that are fading away, such as wet-plate collodion, salt and albumen printing.

Look for the juried show Past is Present organized by Heather and Jenn in Fall 2006 at VSW. The exhibition will showcase work that is breathing new life into bygone processes used at the dawn of photography. The show encourages sculptural work, installation and book arts using historic photographic process.

 VSW Student at Big Muddy
  Kiera Faber

MFA student Kiera Faber's recent film Evils was accepted into the Big Muddy Film Festival, which took place February 14 through March 5 at Southern Illinois University. The event is one of the oldest student/community-run film festivals in the country.

Found and Shared: The Magazine as Photowork
  Foundation Shared image

We are finalizing our substantial contributions to the exhibition Found and Shared: the Magazine as Photowork. The exhibition at the Cube Gallery in Manchester, England, will provide an exciting and scholarly look at the creative photography magazine. The show features contemporary artists, such as the German group, Ohio, who produce magazines as an "original" and social work of art. Our part in the exhibition is the "archival" section presenting titles of current artists' magazines such as Ohio, Useful Photography, Found and Permanent Food.

Our MFA students, Komal Crasto and David Mount have accomplished phenomenal work in creating a unique "page turning" program that allows viewers to access online and interact virtually with the magazines. David is also contributing his video work 17523 Pictures based on VSW's Selle collection of San Francisco street photography (it won best of show in the most recent Finger Lakes Biennial Exhibition).

On another topic, MFA student Sara Segerlin edited a unique interview with A. A. Bronson, a member of the Toronto-based artists' group General Idea who produced FILE Megazine. We are seeking funds to expand this remarkable exhibition for travel in Europe and North America.

 Local Exhibit
  Regional Exhibit photo

VSW recently participated with RIT, Alfred's Electronic Arts Program and SUNY Buffalo in the Upstate Graduate Exhibition in the SPAS Gallery in the Gannett Building on the RIT campus. It was a great opportunity to see photography, video and mixed media from talented graduate students working throughout the region. The show ran until April 7.

 Koebel & Schlesinger

On March 15, Caroline Koebel & Kyle Schlesinger gave a well-attended lecture and book signing with the release of their recent book. Schablone Berlin is an artists' book as well as a book of documentation, presenting stencil graffiti from the streets of Germany's most international metropolis.

The book consists of over 100 color photographs showing not only the graffiti, but also its placement within the confines of the city. The introduction examines the semiotic and performative aspects of stencils as a populist form of writing within the contexts of art history, media and urban anthropology.
