Baseball Knocks Off Nationally-Ranked Cortland
Jamie Rose delivers game-winning hit in game two to earn split April 10, 2009
Jamie Rose's two run single helps lift Brockport(credit: Jerry Harris) Senior Jamie Rose (Hornell, NY/Hornell) connected on a bases-loaded single through the left side of the infield which scored two runs in the eighth inning, giving The College at Brockport Baseball team a 3-2 lead and eventually a game-two victory against Cortland in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader Friday afternoon on Clark V. Whited Field in Brockport. With the win, the Golden Eagles salvaged a split as Cortland scored a 15-0 victory in the opener.
Brockport (10-14 overall, 5-3 SUNYAC) fell behind in game two in the eighth inning allowing a pair of runs in the top of the inning but the Golden Eagles responded with a three-run rally for the victory. Junior Joe LaDuca (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) and senior Jason Michaels (Geneva, NY/Geneva) each hit one-out singles before senior Todd Allen (Oriskany, NY/Oriskany) hit a ground ball towards third. The Cortland third baseman tried to tag out LaDuca heading to third base but missed, and his throw to first was late to load the bases for Brockport.
Max Zimmerman (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville North) worked the count for a walk, forcing home the first run of the day for the Golden Eagles. After a strikeout for the second out of the inning, Rose stepped to the plate and delivered his single through the infield and into left field, scoring Allen and Michaels for the Brockport lead. Jason Shannon (North Syracuse, NY/Liverpool) worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning to secure the complete-game victory.
In game one, Cortland scored eight times in the first inning and cruised to the victory. Michaels had a pair of hits in each game, going 2-for-4 in each contest. Zimmerman had two doubles and Kris Gentzke (Clarence, NY/Clarence) had a hit in each game including a triple in the opener.
