Junior Mike Meola (Liverpool, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) was 2-for-2 with a walk and two runs batted in to lead The College at Brockport Baseball team to a 7-6 victory in game one of a non-conference doubleheader over Clarkson University Saturday at Jack Phillips Stadium in Potsdam. Clarkson rebounded to win a 4-2 decision in the nightcap for a split of the doubleheader.

Brockport (11-15) scored four times in the third inning of the opener after falling behind 2-0 as Clarkson (9-11) scored single runs in each of the first two innings. The Knights added a run in the fourth and took a 5-4 lead with a pair of runs in the fifth. The Golden Eagles regained the lead with three runs in the sixth and Clarkson closed to within a run in the bottom of the seventh for the final score.

In the third, Jim Gaudet (Albany, NY/CBA) doubled home Joe Zaccardo (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) for the first Brockport run of the game. Jason Michaels (Geneva, NY/Geneva) singled two batters later to score two more runners and, after Michaels advanced to second on a wild pitch, Todd Allen (Oriskany, NY/Oriskany) drove him home with a single to center field.

In the sixth, Kris Gentzke (Clarence, NY/Clarence) doubled after a leadoff walk was issued to Allen. Jamie Rose (Hornell, NY/Hornell) was intentionally walked to load the bases before a wild pitch advanced all three runners, scoring Allen from third. Max Zimmerman (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville North) was then intentionally walked to load the bases again and Meola singled bringing home two more runners.

In game two, Brockport was limited to three hits with Brent Nicholson (Pulaski, NY/Pulaski), Allen and Zimmerman each delivering one hit. Brockport’s runs came in the first and sixth innings as Zimmerman singled to score Nicholson in the first inning after Nicholson walked and advanced to second on a balk. In the sixth, Nicholson opened the inning with a double to left centerfield and Allen knocked him home with a single up the middle.

The Golden Eagles had a chance to tie it up in the seventh but Michaels was forced out at third base and two runners were stranded on second and third when the final out was registered.
