The Golden Eagles advance to play the winner of Friday afternoon’s SUNY Cortland vs. SUNY Plattsburgh contest at 1 pm Saturday in Cortland.
Brockport (20-19) opened the scoring in the second inning when Tom McCormick (Utica, NY/Utica Notre Dame) hit a two-out single and came all the way around to score when Zaccardo hit a hard shot down the right field line. The right fielder dove but missed the ball and Zaccardo kept going until he was held up at third.
In the third inning, Brockport added another run for a 2-0 lead when Kris Gentzke (Clarence, NY/Clarence) singled home Max Zimmerman (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville North). Two Brockport runners had been thrown out at the plate earlier in the inning.
Fredonia (25-9) scored its only run of the game in the fifth inning when the leadoff hitter singled and the second hitter of the inning doubled for an RBI.
The score remained 2-1 until the ninth inning when Zaccardo led off with his fifth home run of the season to give the Golden Eagles a 3-1 lead.
Jason Shannon (North Syracuse, NY/Liverpool) finished out the complete-game victory with a strikeout, his sixth of the game. The win ties Shannon for the career lead in wins for the Golden Eagles with his 17th career victory.
Zaccardo, Joe DeLuca (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) and Todd Allen (Oriskany, NY/Oriskany) each had two hits in the game for the Golden Eagles.
