Brockport had advanced to the championship after defeating SUNY Fredonia, 6-2, earlier in the day.
Against Fredonia, senior Todd Allen (Oriskany, NY/Oriskany) hit a two-run home run to cap a three-run seventh inning for the Golden Eagles (23-23). Brockport had taken a 3-0 lead in the sixth inning and extended the lead to 6-0 with the three runs in the seventh before Fredonia (26-12) scored twice in the bottom half of the inning for the final score. Gentzke was the winning pitcher with seven solid innings of work, allowing just two runs – one earned – and striking out five batters. McCormick and Allen each had a pair of hits and two runs batted in for the Golden Eagles.
In the championship round, Brockport needed to defeat St. John Fisher (23-17) twice in order to claim the ECAC title. The Cardinals opened with four runs in the bottom of the first inning but Brockport battled back with a run in the third and two more in the fourth to cut the lead to 4-3.
The Cardinals scored once in the fifth and then rallied for five in the sixth to take a commanding lead. They added insurance runs in both the seventh and eighth innings for the win.
Gentzke and McCormick each had a pair of hits while Allen contributed an RBI. The RBI was his 45th of the season, which establishes a new school record, breaking the previous mark of 41 set by Brad Baglio in 1997.
Jason Michaels (Geneva, NY/Geneva) had one hit in the game and finished the season with 56, the fourth-highest single-season total in school history. Michaels also tied the school record for runs scored in a season with 41 when he crossed the plate in the Fredonia game early in the day.
