Freshman kicker Emilio Genzano (Albany, NY/Guilderland) capped an 18-play 8:08 drive late in the fourth quarter with a 22-yard field goal to lead The College at Brockport Football team to a 22-19 come-from-behind victory over William Paterson University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game Saturday at Wightman Stadium in Wayne, New Jersey.

The Golden Eagles (1-0 overall, 1-0 NJAC) fell behind early and trailed 10-7 at halftime before William Paterson (0-1, 0-1) took a 19-7 lead with 2:35 left to play in the third quarter. Brockport scored with 17 seconds left in the third to narrow the gap to 19-13 on a Riedrick Alceus (Haverstraw, NY/North Rockland) four-yard scoring run.

Alceus tied the game with 9:22 left in the fourth quarter as the junior tailback capped a 10-play drive with a one-yard plunge. The extra point that would have given the Golden Eagles a one-point lead was blocked by the Pioneer defense.

The ensuing William Paterson drive stalled after three plays, forcing the Pioneers to punt the ball back to Brockport. The Golden Eagles took over possession at their own 38-yard line with 8:19 on the clock. Brockport moved methodically down the field converting two third-down plays for first downs and two fourth-down plays to move the chains and keep the drive alive.

With the ball on the William Paterson five-yard line and under a minute to play, the Pioneer defense stuffed two Brockport rushing plays for no gain and forced a fourth-and-goal situation with 11 seconds remaining from the five-yard line.

Genzano trotted onto the field and calmly hit the 22-yard field goal to give Brockport a 22-19 lead.

After a long kickoff return put the ball near midfield, William Paterson’s final play was a completed pass that ended the game before the receiver could get out of bounds to stop the clock for another play.

Alceus led the Golden Eagles with 114 yards on 24 carries and senior Aaron Zurn (Sidney, NY/Sidney) added 81 yards on 19 carries for Brockport. Senior quarterback Jake Graci (Farnham, NY/Lake Shore) completed 10-of-14 passes for 98 yards and also scored Brockport’s first touchdown with a 7-yard run.

Sophomore Tamere Shannon (Buffalo, NY/McKinley) had five receptions for 40 yards.

The Brockport defense forced William Paterson to settle for two first-half field goals after penetrating the red zone and stiffened in the fourth quarter to keep the Pioneers off the scoreboard. Nathan Bull (Brockport, NY/Brockport) led the defense with 17 tackles, including nine solo stops, while Matt Mangona (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) and Derek Austin (Cherry Creek, NY/Pine Valley) made 10 tackles each. Mangona led the team with 1½ tackles for lost yardage. Cody Geffers (York, NY/York) had four tackles, two pass break-ups and the game’s only interception.
