Senior Aaron Zurn (Sidney, NY/Sidney) rushed for a career-high 145 yards and scored three touchdowns and fellow senior Felipe Diaz (Syracuse, NY/Onondaga) tied a school record with 12 receptions for 123 yards, but it was not enough as The College of New Jersey scored two late touchdowns to post a 48-34 victory over The College at Brockport Football team Saturday in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game in Ewing, NJ.

Zurn scored on a three-yard run late in the first quarter to give Brockport (2-3 overall, 1-3 NJAC) an early 7-0 lead, but New Jersey (4-1, 3-1) tied the score 1:30 later on a 40-yard completion.

In the second quarter, TCNJ took a 17-7 lead with a 37-yard field goal and a one-yard plunge to cap a 98-yard drive. The Golden Eagles responded with a 15-yard TD run by quarterback Jake Graci (Farnham, NY/Lake Shore) with 1:31 left to play in the first half. After a 10-play TCNJ drive ended on a failed fourth down conversion, Brockport took over at midfield with 26 seconds remaining in the half.

Graci completed two passes, and a 15-yard penalty against the Lions moved the ball to the 25-yard line, but Graci’s next pass into the end zone was intercepted to end the first half of play.

TCNJ opened the second half with a 28-yard field goal after a 10-play drive stalled at the Brockport 11-yard line. On the ensuing drive, Zurn fumbled away the ball on the second play of the drive and the Lions marched down the field, scoring on a short run to take a 27-14 lead with 6:34 left in the third quarter.

Brockport recovered and put together a 10-play, 80-yard drive that was capped by a 16-yard scoring pass from Graci to Matt Newman (Unadilla, NY/Unatego) to cut the New Jersey lead to six points at 27-21.

In the final minutes of the third quarter, TCNJ extended its lead with a seven-play drive consisting of seven consecutive running plays and ending with a 1-yard plunge into the end zone. The extra point attempt was blocked by Brockport but an offsides penalty gave the Lions a second chance and they converted for a 34-21 lead with 15 seconds left in the third quarter.

After a short drive by each team, Brockport took possession at its own 13-yard line and Graci engineered a 19-play drive that covered 87 yards and ended with a Zurn 12-yard scamper into the end zone. Emilio Genzano (Albany, NY/Guilderland) converted the extra point to cut the TCNJ lead to 34-28 with 5:34 to play.

The Lions fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Derek Austin (Cherry Creek, NY/Pine Valley) jumped on the ball, giving Brockport possession at the TCNJ 36-yard line. Seven plays later, Zurn was in the end zone again, this time on a seven-yard run, but the extra point attempt was blocked leaving the score tied at 34-34 with 5:04 to play.

The Lions used just 1:40 off the clock in moving the ball down the field and regaining the lead with a 41-yard pass completion. Brockport moved into its two-minute offense and marched down the field until a Graci third-down pass attempt was intercepted near midfield and returned to the Brockport 29-yard line.

TCNJ needed just two plays to score again with a 29-yard pass completion giving the Lions the 48-34 lead with 1:51 left on the clock.

Brockport mounted a late drive that moved to the TCNJ 11-yard line but Graci was intercepted for the third time in the game, giving the ball back to the Lions who ended the game with a kneel down.

Zurn finished with a career-high 145 yards on 30 carries. He also caught three passes for another 17 yards and scored three TDs – all on running plays. Graci was 33-for-56 for 307 yards and one TD but also threw three interceptions. Graci moved into the top-10 in passing yards for a season and has 1,335 yards so far on the year.

Diaz was the favorite target all day as he tied his own school record with 12 receptions in a game. He also had 12 catches against SUNY Cortland in 2008. He finished with 123 yards against the Lions.

Defensively, Chad Moore (Trumansburg, NY/C.O. Dickerson) led the team with 11 tackles, including one for a loss. Derek DeCandia (Beacon, NY/Beacon) and Nathan Bull (Brockport, NY/Brockport) each finished with 10 tackles while Cevon Carver (Bronx, NY/Dewitt Clinton) and Darren Vukovic (North Tonawanda, NY/Starpoint) chipped in nine tackles each. Carver had the only interception of the day for the Brockport defense and was also credited with a pass breakup.
