Senior Matt Newman (Unadilla, NY/Unatego) caught a 62-yard touchdown pass on a flea-flicker play with just under 10 minutes to play in the second quarter to give The College at Brockport Football team a 14-10 lead but Kean University answered with 30 straight points over the next 18 minutes of action to post a 40-22 New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) victory Saturday on Bob Boozer Field at Special Olympics Stadium in Brockport.

Kean (5-1 overall, 5-0 NJAC) opened the scoring with a 30-yard field goal with 5:36 left to play in the first quarter for the early lead but Brockport (2-4, 1-4) responded with a 12-play, 74-yard drive that was capped by a two-yard touchdown run by senior Aaron Zurn (Sidney, NY/Sidney).

In the second quarter, Kean took a 10-7 lead on a 28-yard pass from quarterback Tom D’Ambrisi to Derric Harris. On Brockport’s ensuing drive, quarterback Jake Graci (Farnham, NY/Lake Shore) completed an 11-yard pass to Felipe Diaz (Syracuse, NY/Onondaga) to set up the flea-flicker play to Newman. Graci handed the ball to Zurn for a sweep but Zurn flipped the ball to Diaz headed in the opposite direction who then tossed the ball back to Graci who found a wide open Newman in the middle of the field. Newman raced 30 yards after the catch into the end zone to give Brockport a 14-10 advantage.

The Brockport defense forced a punt on the next possession but after Derek Austin had signaled for a fair catch and was hit by a defender on the play, Austin started to run up the field and was flagged for a delay of game penalty, forcing the Golden Eagles to start the drive from their own five-yard line.

The teams traded punts over the next three drives before Kean mounted a late drive near the end of the first half. With 2:30 left to play in the half, D’Ambrisi engineered a nine-play, 80-yard scoring drive to retake the lead 17-14.

Brockport had its next drive stopped after three consecutive incomplete passes, but the Brockport punt was blocked and returned to the three-yard line with 12 seconds left in the half. After Kean was stopped for a five-yard loss, the Cougars settled for a 25-yard field goal to go into the locker room with a 20-14 lead.

Brockport opened the second half with a short drive ending in a punt and Kean wasted no time extending its lead, driving 69 yards in three plays and scoring on a 26-yard pass completion for a 26-14 lead after the extra point kick sailed wide to the right.

After a six-play Brockport drive that ended near midfield as the Golden Eagles elected to punt on a fourth-and-one situation, Kean again used little time with a four-play scoring drive. A 42-yard quarterback bootleg play capped the drive and gave the Cougars a 33-14 advantage.

Kean scored again before the end of the third quarter for a 40-14 lead. Brockport’s next possession went 68 yards in eight plays but ended on the Kean two-yard line when Graci was intercepted in the end zone with less than a minute to play in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Kean put together three drives consuming 11:30 of the 15-minute quarter, keeping the Brockport offense off the field for a majority of the quarter. The Golden Eagles did score on a Joe Scibilia (North Tonawanda, NY/Starpoint) scoring pass to Matt Luke (Macedon, NY/Wayne) with 2:46 to play in the game.

Zurn led Brockport with 68 yards on the ground and added 14 yards on two receptions. Diaz caught nine passes for 77 yards while Newman had two catches for 71 yards and a touchdown.

Nathan Bull (Brockport, NY/Brockport) led the Golden Eagles with 14 tackles and a forced fumble while Chris Grace (Allegany, NY/Allegany-Limestone) registered 12 tackles and two pass deflections in his first start at safety.
