Brockport (2-5 overall, 1-5 NJAC) had double-digit leads of 27-17 late in the first half and again at 41-31 late in the third quarter but each time Western Connecticut (1-6, 1-5) rebounded to take a lead, including a touchdown with 1:02 remaining in the fourth quarter to take a 45-44 lead.
In the final minute, Brockport moved to the Colonial 33-yard line but a quarterback sack and a fumble with 10 seconds remaining gave the ball back to Western Connecticut to seal the victory.
Western opened the scoring with an 11-play drive that ended with a 25-yard field goal, but Brockport quickly erased the lead as Carver returned the ensuing kickoff 80 yards for the touchdown and a 7-3 Brockport lead.
On the next possession, Connecticut regained the lead with a six-play drive capped by a 1-yard plunge into the end zone for a 10-7 lead.
At the start of the second quarter, junior linebacker Nathan Bull (Brockport, NY/Brockport) sacked the Western Connecticut quarterback on a fourth down attempt at the Brockport 20-yard line. Brockport took over possession and marched down the field, scoring on a 24-yard pass from Jake Graci (Farnham, NY/Lake Shore) to sophomore Tamere Shannon (Buffalo, NY/McKinley) to give Brockport a 14-10 advantage.
The Colonials wasted little time regaining the lead, moving down the field in five plays, including two long running plays, and scored on a 16-yard pass completion.
Carver struck again on the ensuing kickoff, returning the kick 90 yards for the score and giving Brockport a 20-17 lead with 9:48 remaining in the first half.
The next two Colonial drives were stopped by interceptions as Bull picked off one pass and Darren Vukovic (North Tonawanda, NY/Starpoint) intercepted another. After the second interception, Brockport engineered a 10-play drive that was capped by a Riedrick Alceus (Haverstraw, NY/North Rockland) seven-yard scoring run that gave the Golden Eagles their first 10-point lead at 27-17 with 1:35 left in the half.
Western Connecticut moved down the field with 10 consecutive pass plays and scored with 17 seconds left before halftime with a 15-yard TD pass to cut the lead to 27-24 at the intermission.
On the first drive of the third quarter, Graci was sacked on a fourth-down conversion attempt and three plays later the Colonials were in the end zone, courtesy of a 48-yard run to take a 31-27 lead. Brockport answered with a 13-play drive that ended with a 10-yard scoring pass from Graci to Shannon as the tandem connected for the second time in the game. The TD gave Brockport a 34-31 advantage.
After a Western Connecticut punt, Graci scrambled 21 yards into the end zone to cap a short four-play drive and give Brockport another 10-point lead at 41-31 with 3:38 left to play in the third quarter.
The teams traded punts on the next four drives, but Western Connecticut cut the lead to 41-38 with 8:29 to play on a 35-yard rush into the end zone. The Golden Eagles chewed up some time off the clock with a 10-play drive but the drive stalled inside the Colonial 10-yard line and Brockport settled for a 27-yard field goal and a 44-38 lead with 4:35 to play.
A long kickoff return gave the Colonials good field position and they scored on a three-yard pass despite a strong effort by the Brockport defense on a goal line stand with four plays inside the Brockport five-yard line. The touchdown gave Western Connecticut a 45-44 lead.
After a 25-yard kickoff return by sophomore Andrew McCormick (Peru, NY/Peru), Graci completed two passes to Felipe Diaz (Syracuse, NY/Onondaga) and one to Matt Newman (Unadilla, NY/Unatego), moving the ball all the way to the Colonial 33-yard line but with 15 seconds remaining on the clock, Graci was sacked and fumbled the ball which was recovered by the Colonials to end the game.
Graci was 18-for-32 passing for 195 yards and two touchdowns and also led the Brockport rushing attack with 63 yards. Shannon and Diaz each had seven catches for the Golden Eagles.
Bull led the defense with 14 tackles, a sack, a forced fumble and an interception. Carver had two kickoff returns with both ending in touchdowns and finished with 170 yards.
