Junior Christina Baggetta (Latham, NY/Shaker) and freshman Kaitlin Dewey (Saratoga, NY/Saratoga Springs) qualified for the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) National Championship finals in two different individual events to lead The College at Brockport Gymnastics team to a second-place finish at the 2009 Championship Meet Friday night at Hamline University in Minnesota. The team and all-around competition was completed Friday night and the four individual apparatus championships and All-America awards will be concluded Saturday.

Brockport held a slim lead after three rotations in the team competition with a score of 139.900, slightly ahead of Wisconsin-La Crosse, the defending national champs, with a three-rotation total of 139.300. Brockport scored a 45.050 on the uneven bars on its final event while La Crosse posted a 47.475 score on the vault to pass the Golden Eagles and claim the 2009 National Championship as a team. It is the second consecutive year the Golden Eagles have finished second at the NCGA Championships.

The top 14 individuals in each event advance to Saturday’s competition with the National Champion and All-America awards being handed out in each of the four events.

Baggetta scored a 9.525 to advance in the floor exercise and also led Brockport with a 9.425 on the uneven bars and will compete Saturday in both events. Dewey posted a 9.475 in the vault and had a team-best 9.550 on the balance beam to advance to Saturday’s competition in both events.

Joining Baggetta and Dewey on Saturday will be senior Stacy Johnson (Mechanicsville, MD/St. Mary’s) who scored a 9.250 on the uneven bars, junior Carrie Rock, (Chambersburg, PA/North Hagerstown) who scored a 9.50 on the vault, and junior Lauren Gildemeyer (Baldwinsville, NY/CW Baker), who posted a team-best 9.65 in vaulting.

The top 12 finishers in each event will be crowned All-America award winners.

Senior Nikki Visnick (Natick, MA/Natick) finished just 0.025 points away from qualifying for the finals on the balance beam with a 9.4 score.
