Gymnastics Finishes Strong at National Championships
Four Golden Eagles win All-American Awards March 21, 2009
 Brockport took five All-America awards on the final day of the NCGA National Championship meet(credit: James Dusen) Junior Christina Baggetta (Latham, NY/Shaker) won two All-America awards while freshman Kaitlin Dewey (Saratoga, NY/Saratoga Springs), junior Lauren Gildemeyer (Baldwinsville, NY/CW Baker) and senior Stacy Johnson (Mechanicsville, MD/St. Mary’s) were also All-Americans at the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) National Championship finals Saturday at Hamline University in Minnesota. Brockport finished second in the team competition that was completed late Friday night.
Brockport held a slim lead after three rotations in the team competition with a score of 139.900, slightly ahead of Wisconsin-La Crosse with a three-rotation total of 139.300. Brockport scored a 45.050 on the uneven bars on its final event while La Crosse posted a 47.475 score on the vault to pass the Golden Eagles and claim the 2009 National Championship as a team. It is the second consecutive year the Golden Eagles have finished second at the NCGA Championships.
The top 14 individuals in each event advanced to Saturday’s competition with the National Champion and All-America awards being handed out in each of the four events.
Baggetta scored a 9.525 to advance in the floor exercise and finished in 10th place with a two-day total of 18.950. She also led Brockport with a 9.425 on the uneven bars after the first day and finished in eighth place with a score of 18.250. Dewey posted a 9.475 in the vault on the first night and took fifth place overall with a two-day total of 19.000.
Johnson scored a 9.250 on the uneven bars Friday and posted an 18.575 over both days for a 10th-place finish and Gildemeyer posted a team-best 9.65 in vaulting on Friday and followed that up with a 19.150 two-day total for a seventh-place finish in the event.
The top 12 finishers in each event were crowned All-America award winners.
Seniors Nikki Visnick (Natick, MA/Natick), Brittany Burr (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) and Jessica Downs (Parish, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) each earned NCGA All-Academic awards for Brockport.
