Seven Honorees Join 126 Others in Hall of Fame


BROCKPORT, NY - Seven distinguished members of the SUNY Brockport Athletics family will be inducted into the Golden Eagle Athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday, October 9.

The ceremony will take place at the New York Room in Cooper Hall on the SUNY Brockport campus. The evening begins at 7:00 p.m. with a buffet dinner and the induction ceremonies. Tickets are priced at $30 and can be reserved by calling (585) 395-5328.

The Class of 2004 is: Brian Lynch '79, Pierce Mahar '77, Douglas J. May '71, James L. May '74, Grace Robbins Santana '97, Nicole "Nikki" VanDenBerghe Wardle '96, and Wanda L. Zawadzki '97.

This year's inductees will bring the total Hall of Fame class membership to 133, since the first class was inducted in 1985. The newest members will be introduced at halftime of the October 9 SUNY Brockport football game vs. St. John Fisher, which begins at 2:00 p.m. The game also features Homecoming and Family Weekend.

Here are the biographies of the Class of 2004 Golden Eagle Hall of Famers:

BRIAN LYNCH
Men's Swimming & Diving
Artist/Teacher, New York, New York
SUNY College at Brockport '79 - Major: Painting
University of Iowa '84 - MFA: Printmaking

Earned multiple All-American honors while swimming the backstroke for the Golden Eagles in the 1970s; was an All-American in the 100 and 200 backstroke as a freshman, sophomore and senior, placing as high as second in the 100 back in 1977; also was 4th (1976) and 6th (1979) in the 100 back and 7th (1976), 6th (1977), and 6th (1979) in the 200 back; set school and SUNYAC records in both the 100 and 200 back; both school records still stand (longest records on the books); was a SUNYAC Champion in both events as a freshman and placed second as a sophomore and senior; also set a school record in the 200 individual medley and was a member of the record-setting 400 medley relay; competed for three years and was a captain once. Swam competitively for a Chicago Masters swim team from 1984 to 1988 and has been swimming for a New York Masters team since 1995. Graduated from Brockport with a degree in painting; spent junior year as an apprentice to Alex Katz in New York City; numerous exhibitions and awards, including the Milton & Sally Avery Fellowship in 2000, the New York Foundation for the Arts fellowship in 1998, and a fellowship from the Illinois Arts council in 1987

First of just two baseball All-Americans in Brockport history; honored by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) after the 1977 season; Brockport did not have another baseball All-American until 2004; played third base as a Golden Eagle; also named All-District and All-SUNYAC as a senior; set school records for batting average, hits, runs and stolen bases in 1977; played two years at Brockport after a two-year stint at Hudson Valley CC; named MVP at HVCC as a sophomore. Continued baseball career in the Albany Twilight Baseball Semi-Pro League; all-star from 1972 to 1978 and 1984-85; league MVP in 1984; named to its Hall of Fame in 2001; member of the Capital District Senior Men's Baseball League and an all-star from 1994 to 1999; inducted into the Catholic Central High School Athletic Hall of Fame. President of Education Funding Specialists, Inc. since 1993; works with families of students going through college funding/financial aid process; certified by Professional Ski Instructors of America; youth sports coach.

DOUGLAS J. MAY (deceased)

Four-year soccer midfielder for the Golden Eagles; named All-State in 1969 and All-SUNYAC in 1969 and 1970; led team to an overall record of 37-5-5, including an 11-0-1 season in 1968 when the team outscored its 12 opponents by a combined 45-1; team won three SUNYAC titles in his career and captured the NCAA East Region crown in 1970; that team was the last one coached by fellow Hall of Famer A. Huntley Parker Jr. Standout coaching career began at the University of North Carolina as a graduate assistant; followed with coaching stints at Wayne Central School, New Lebanon Valley High School, Dean Junior College, and Eisenhower College; began coaching at RIT in 1980 and guided the Tigers through 1995 before taking over at Nazareth College until 2003; had an overall collegiate coaching record of 251-120-38 in 24 years at the two Rochester-area schools; led RIT to the national championship game in 1988; earned National Coach of the Year honors in 1989 and was a five-time regional or conference coach of the year; won a conference crown in his last year at Nazareth. Passed away in April 2004 after a brief illness; brother of fellow 2004 inductee Jim May.

JAMES L. MAY

SUNY Cobleskill ’72 - Associate's Degree

Two-year starting goalkeeper for the men's soccer team at the College; named an All-American in 1972; first-team All-SUNYAC and All-State in both 1972 and 1973; led team to a 19-5 record in two seasons, including a 10-1 mark and number four national ranking as a senior; team captain in 1973; played two years at Cobleskill before transferring to Brockport; also was an All-American there and inducted into Cobleskill's Hall of Fame. Selected in the first round of the 1974 North American Soccer League (NASL) draft by the Rochester Lancers; played 12 seasons of professional soccer with the Lancers (including all-star appearances in 1975 and 1976) and three Major Indoor Soccer league (MISL) teams: Cleveland Force (1979), Buffalo Stallions (1980-84), and Baltimore Blast (1984-85); was the player-coach in Buffalo in 1983-84; also was an MISL all-star in 1980-81 while with the Stallions. Currently is the President and owner of Sportsplex, Inc., the largest and longest running indoor sports complex in western New York; served previously as head coach, vice president and general manager of the Buffalo Blizzard of the National professional Soccer League (NPSL) in the 1990s; involved heavily in youth sports in the region.

GRACE ROBBINS SANTANA

Standout centerfielder for the softball team at the College for four years; named a first-team GTE-CoSIDA Academic All-American in 1997 (first and still only Brockport softball player to ever earn that honor); named All-East, All-ECAC Upstate New York, All-NCAA East Regional, All-State, and All-SUNYAC in a senior year that was capped by Brockport’s top NCAA Tournament performance in school history; set eight school records, including longest hitting streak (21 games) and career (38) and season (19) stolen bases; team won the 1994 and 1997 SUNYAC Championships, earning berths in the NCAA Tournament, and captured the 1995 NYSWCAA Championship; three-time All-SUNYAC pick (1995-97); named the College’s Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year for 1996-97; one of 10 NYSWCAA Scholar-Athletes in 1997; three-time captain. Graduated from Brockport with a 3.64 overall grade point average; was the President of the Alpha Chi Sigma National Criminal Justice Honor Society as a senior; completed her master's degree at Oswego, with an emphasis in school counseling, with a 3.93 GPA. Currently is a counselor at General Brown; also taught and was a counselor in East Rockaway and Gouverneur Central School.

NICOLE "NIKKI" VANDENBERGHE WARDLE

Four-year standout on the women's soccer team; also starred in lacrosse for two years and played softball and basketball; in soccer, set school record for career points (male or female) with 100; also set marks for career goals (42) and goals by a freshman (11); All-SUNYAC in 1993, 1994, 1995; All-State in 1995 and All-Northeast twice (1994, 1995); led team to state title and ECAC finals in 1995 and helped Brockport to school-record 16 wins that season; honored as an all-tournament selection three times at the Keuka Invitational (MVP once); in lacrosse, scored 23 goals and added 12 assists in first two years of the program; led team in draw controls as well; one-year reserve on the basketball and softball teams. Secretary and treasurer of the Physical Education Club and a member of Phi Epsilon Kappa Fraternity while a student; won the Ruth Garis Award from the Department of Physical Education and Sport in 1996; NASPE Outstanding Major of the Year in 1996; volunteer for the Games for the Physically Challenged and community awareness in physical education; Teacher, coach and athletic coordinator at John D. Runkle School; also taught in the Cambridge Friends School and was the head coach for women's soccer at Nichols College in Dudley, MA.

Four-year standout starting shortstop on the women's softball team; named to the All-SUNYAC team all four years (1994-97); also named to the NYSWCAA All-Tournament team twice 1995 and 1997) and to the NCAA Regional All-Tournament team (1997); All-Region once (1997); set seven school records while at Brockport, including career games (127, all as a starter), at-bats (451), runs (107), hits (167), and total bases (243); led team to a record of 85-44 over four years, including two SUNYAC titles (1994 and 1997), the 1996 NYSWCAA crown, and a third-place finish at the 1997 NCAA Regionals (best-ever for softball team at Brockport); 1997 team set school record for wins (25). Three-year volunteer for the Empire State Games for the Physically Challenged while a student at Brockport. Currently teaching in the Rochester City School District; previously taught in Newnan, GA at Jefferson Parkway Elementary and taught and coached at East Coweta Middle School in Senoia, GA; also has taught and coached at the Nathaniel Rochester Community School and in the Lyndonville and Brockport Central School Districts; has coached basketball, soccer, softball, and swimming at the varsity, JV, and modified levels.
