Women’s Indoor Track & Field Edged at SUNYACs
Brockport women finish second after controversial call in final relay February 28, 2009 Melissa Scorse (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Mendon) set another school record in the 55-meter dash with a winning time of 7.18 seconds to lead The College at Brockport Women’s Track & Field team at the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Championships Saturday at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. Brockport ended up second in the championships by a six-point margin after a controversial call in the 4x400 relay disqualified Brockport’s first-place team.
The initial protest lodged by head coach Mark Krueger was upheld dropping Buffalo State down to second in the final standings but the Jury of Appeals overturned the Meet Referee's decision to disqualify the Buffalo State relay giving the Bengals the eight points for second place in the race. The decision dropped the Golden Eagles into second place after the final event of the meet. The relay, that included Randi DeBoy (Salamanca, NY/Salamanca), Kaitlin Breed (Manchester, NY/Manchester-Shortsville), Shannon O’Keeffe (Boston, NY/Springville-Griffith) and Amanda Elias (Belmont, NY/Genesee Valley), was leading the race until Elias fell on the final leg of the race. The dispute alleged contact by a Buffalo State runner caused the fall.
Brockport ended up with 118 points in second place behind Buffalo State, who scored 124. SUNY Geneseo was third with 114 and SUNY Cortland was fourth with 102 points.
The Brockport men took fifth place overall with 88.5 points finishing behind SUNY Cortland (117), SUNY Geneseo (104.5), Buffalo State (95.5) and SUNY Oneonta (91).
Scorse broke her own school record in the 55-meter dash with a :07.18 time in the finals, also establishing a new meet record in the event in the process, just .04 seconds away from automatic NCAA Championship qualifying standards. The time provisionally qualified her for the championships.
Scorse also won the 200-meter dash in :25.99 while Elias won the 800-meter race with a time of 2:20.31. DeBoy was second in the 400 with a :59.70 and O’Keeffe was third in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.71 seconds.
O’Keeffe won the triple jump, equaling her season’s best jump of 11.49 meters, and Bridget Mayne (Schoharie, NY/Schoharie) qualified for the NCAA Championships with a second-place finish in the weight throw with a provisionally-qualifying throw of 15.59 meters.
Sophomore Brittany Streeter (Oneida, NY/Oneida) was third in the 3,000-meter race, finishing in a time of 10:41.19, and freshman Becky Fabbiano (Lockport, NY/Lockport) took third in the pole vault, clearing a height of 3.15 meters. Junior Nicole Sosnoski (Elmira, NY/Elmira Southside) scored third-place points for the Golden Eagles in the long jump with a 5.19-meter leap. Lauren Campanella (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) and Brittany Falcon (Victor, NY/Victor) finished fifth and sixth in the event respectively.
For the Brockport men, junior Cevon Carver (Bronx, NY/Dewitt Clinton) scored 30 points on his own with a second-place finish in the 55-meter dash with a school-record time of 6.53 seconds, a sixth-place finish in the 200-meter dash, a second-place finish in the 55-meter hurdles and a first-place finish in the long jump with an NCAA Championships provisionally-qualifying leap of 7.0 meters.
Ray Lund (Thiells, NY/North Rockland) won the weight throw with a 17.61-meter heave and also took fourth in the shot put with a 13.97-meter distance. Dom Gonzalez (Monroe, NY/Monroe-Woodbury) was second in the weight throw while Matt Hand (Belmont, NY/Genesee Valley) took fourth and Greg Parizek (Hilton, NY/Hilton) finished sixth as Brockport scored 26 points in the event.
