Shannon O'Keeffe wins National Championship in Triple Jump Junior Shannon O'Keeffe (Boston, NY/Springville Griffith) capped a successful indoor track & field season by becoming a National Champion in the triple jump at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships Saturday at Ohio Northern University in Ada, Ohio. Senior Josh Dupuis (Tupper Lake, NY/Tupper Lake) finished third in the shot put to collect his fourth career All-America award.
O'Keeffe was in second place after the first round of three jumps but used a leap of 11.70 meters (38 feet, 4 ¾ inches) on her fifth attempt of the championships to move into first place overall. In the final round of jumps, none of the remaining field was able to come within a foot of O'Keeffe’s winning distance. O'Keeffe faulted on two of her six attempts but had impressive jumps of 11.64, 11.43 and 11.51 meters in her three attempts.
The National Title is the second for The College at Brockport in the last two years as Nick Stanisavljevic won the high jump at the 2007 Indoor Championships. O'Keeffe becomes the first female Brockport athlete to win a National Championship for Indoor Track and the third women’s National Champion for Brockport Track & Field. Carrie Gorton won the National Title in 1991 in the javelin, as did Pam Leffler in the 400-meter hurdles in 1992. Both of those titles took place at the Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Dupuis won his fourth All-America award and his third of his career at the Indoor Track & Field Championships. He finished sixth as a freshman in 2005 and third as a junior last season. He also finished fourth in the shot put at the 2007 Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Dupuis was in second place after the preliminary rounds with a 16.76 meter (55 feet) toss. In the final round of throws Nathan Turner from Bridgewater College dropped Dupuis to third place by less than an inch with a 16.78. The 55-foot heave was the season's best effort for Dupuis and came on his final throw of the preliminary round of competition.
