The Golden Eagles (0-1) will play the loser of the Johns Hopkins vs. Moravian University game at 6 pm Saturday in the consolation game of the tournament.
Brockport trailed by a 39-35 score at the halftime intermission but battled back and tied the score at 41-41 on a Joe Clarke (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) three-pointer early in the half. Whitworth (1-0) responded with a 9-0 run and held a consistent lead until the midway point of the second half. Brockport closed the gap to four points at 60-56 with nine minutes to play as Almeida hit a pair of free throws but Whitworth went on another run – this time an 11-0 flurry – to open the game up.
Almeida hit a jumper with 6:01 to play to make the score 74-60, but Whitworth held on down the stretch by hitting key free throws and not allowing Brockport to cut into the lead late in the game.
Almeida led Brockport with 14 points and was the only player scoring in double figures. Eamon Kays (Mexico, NY/Mexico) and Brandon Williams (Rochester, NY/Wilson) each added eight points, and Kays led the team with six rebounds. Mychal Wilkes (Newark, NY/Newark) and Cantrel Parrish (Buffalo, NY/Grover Cleveland) each chipped in seven points while Shawn Harris (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) and Clarke each scored six points apiece. Ian Mack (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) led the way with six assists and did not commit a turnover.
