Late Free Throws Seal Win for Men’s Basketball
Golden Eagles snap SUNYAC losing streak with road win over Fredonia
January 24, 2009
Senior Eamon Kays (Mexico, NY/Mexico) scored a team-best 17 points and grabbed a team-leading seven rebounds while fellow seniors Mychal Wilkes (Newark, NY/Newark) and Joe Clarke (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) added 16 and 12 points respectively to lead The College at Brockport Men’s Basketball team to a 67-48 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) victory over SUNY Fredonia Saturday night at Steele Hall in Fredonia.

The win snapped a five-game regular season conference losing streak dating back to the final game of last year through the first four conference games of 2008-09.

Brockport (5-9 overall, 1-4 SUNYAC) used a nearly-perfect second half from the free throw line to seal the victory. The Golden Eagles missed just one of 15 attempts in the second half and turned an eight-point halftime lead into a double-digit lead for almost the entire second half. Fredonia (10-6, 4-5) tried to foul Brockport near the end of the half but the Golden Eagles connected on all eight free throws down the stretch to nail down the victory. Kays, Wilkes, Clarke and senior Ian Mack (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) all hit a pair of free throws in the final four minutes of the contest.

Brockport used a 10-2 run early in the half to open up its lead to 45-31 with 14:30 to play and added a 7-0 run with six minutes to play to further open the lead as the Golden Eagles took an 18-point lead at 57-39 with 5:50 left in the game.

Brockport finished the game hitting 17-of-23 shots from the free throw line and also shot an impressive 50 percent from the field (21-for-42) in the game. Mack led the team with six assists while Clarke and Kays each contributed three steals.
