Men’s Basketball Falls Behind Early against Cortland
Golden Eagles drop a 72-64 decision on the road
January 27, 2009
Senior Shawn Harris (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) scored 18 points and fellow senior Mychal Wilkes (Newark, NY/Newark) added 15 points to lead The College at Brockport Men’s Basketball team but a first-half run by SUNY Cortland proved to be too much to overcome and the Red Dragons handed Brockport a 72-64 loss Tuesday night in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game at Corey Gym in Cortland.

Brockport (5-10 overall, 1-5 SUNYAC) scored the first seven points of the game and led 13-4 five minutes into the contest, but Cortland (7-9, 4-3) came back to tie the score at 15-15 six minutes later. Over the next seven minutes, Cortland put together a 20-2 run for a 35-17 lead before sophomore Andy Marchand (Rochester, NY/CG Finney) stopped the run with a three-pointer at the 2:11 mark of the half. The Red Dragons led 36-20 at the intermission.

In the second half, Brockport trimmed the lead to eight at 43-35 on a Harris layup and cut the lead further a couple minutes later on a three-point play by Wilkes to bring the Golden Eagles to within five points at 48-43 with 9:28 remaining.

The teams traded baskets over the next four minutes and the lead was still within six points at 62-56 with 5:01 left to play. A 6-0 run by Cortland stretched the lead back to double digits and the Red Dragons held down the stretch for the eight-point victory.

Harris scored 12 of his team-leading 18 points in the second half and was 6-of-10 from the field. Wilkes also had nine of his 15 points in the second half but Brockport connected on only 3-of-18 three-point shots in the come-form-behind effort. Wilkes also grabbed a team-leading eight rebounds.
