Men’s Basketball Nipped by Geneseo on the Road
Golden Eagles fall by a single point to the Knights February 4, 2009
 Mychal Wilkes scored 26 to lead Brockport against Geneseo(credit: Michael Pratt, MLPhoto) Senior Mychal Wilkes (Newark, NY/Newark) scored 14 points in the first half and finished with a team-high 26 but a late basket by SUNY Geneseo gave the Knights a 62-61 victory over The College at Brockport Men’s Basketball team in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game Tuesday night in Geneseo.
Brockport (6-12 overall, 2-7 SUNYAC) fell behind early as Geneseo (13-6, 7-3) opened up a 12-point lead at 17-5 midway through the first half. Wilkes hit two free throws, a three-pointer and a short jumper to help cut the lead to three points at 17-14 but the Knights regained control for an 8-0 run to lead 26-16 three minutes later. The Golden Eagles scored 10 of the final 12 points of the half and trailed 28-26 at the halftime intermission.
Geneseo reestablished its double-digit lead early in the second half and led by 10 at 42-32 with 13:30 to play. Freshman Gerald Williams (Rochester, NY/Charlotte) scored five points and Wilkes added four in an 11-0 run that was capped by a Josh Zenkel (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) basket that gave Brockport its first lead of the game at 43-42 with 10 minutes to play.
Geneseo led by seven points with five minutes left before Wilkes sparked another run with a three-pointer. A basket by Eamon Kays (Mexico, NY/Mexico) with 2:37 left shaved the lead to one point at 55-54. After a Genseo jumper, Wilkes hit another three-pointer to tie the game at 57-57 with 1:36 remaining.
The Knights missed 3-of-4 free throws in the final minute and two free throws by Brockport’s Bobby Brooks (Oneida, NY/Oneida) gave the Golden Eagles a 61-60 lead with 35 seconds left.
A layup by Geneseo’s Mike Hoy regained the lead for the Knights and Brockport missed three shots in the last 11 seconds for the final score.
Wilkes led Brockport with his 26 points while Kays finished with 10 points and a team-leading eight rebounds. Zenkel chipped in eight points and senior Ian Mack (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) handed out seven assists.
