Golden Eagles down Cortland at home, 71-53 February 20, 2009

The win moved Brockport into sole possession of eighth place in the SUNYAC standings and a win over SUNY Geneseo in the regular season finale Saturday would clinch the eighth – and final – SUNYAC Tournament spot for the Golden Eagles.
If the Golden Eagles lose to Geneseo, Brockport would need a SUNY Plattsburgh loss to SUNY New Paltz Saturday evening to still capture the final playoff spot.
Against Cortland, Brockport (10-14 overall, 6-9 SUNYAC) jumped out to an early lead at 12-5 but Cortland (11-13, 8-7) battled back to take a lead and held a one-point advantage with 7:03 left in the first half. Brockport went on a 20-3 run to end the half and held a commanding 37-21 lead at halftime.
In the second half, Brockport maintained the double-digit lead until Cortland trimmed the lead to eight with 2:42 remaining. A Jermaine Johnson (Queens Bridge, NY/Long Island City) three-pointer regained the double-digit lead and four consecutive free throws by Johnson over the next minute extended the Brockport lead to 15 points at 66-51 and the Golden Eagles cruised to the win.
Wilkes led all scorers with his 19 points while seniors Joe Clarke (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) and Ian Mack (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) scored 11 points each. Johnson finished with nine points and also grabbed a team-leading eight rebounds. Brockport connected on 41 percent of its shots from the field and hit nine three-pointers. The aggressive Golden Eagle defense forced 21 Cortland turnovers with 12 steals.
