Men’s Lacrosse Edged in Season Opener

 Matt Andon-McLane scores three goals for Brockport in the season opener(credit: Michael Pratt, MLPhoto) Sophomores Matt Andon-McLane (Syracuse, NY/Nottingham) and Mike McSweeney (Marcellus, NY/Marcellus) each scored three times for The College at Brockport Men’s Lacrosse team but it was not enough as Alfred University handed the Golden Eagles an 8-7 loss in the 2009 season opener Saturday at Alfred.
Alfred (2-0) scored three times in the first quarter to open up an early lead before McSweeney and Andon-McLane each scored early in the second quarter to close the gap. McSweeney took a pass from Joe Gomez (Amherst, NY/Amherst) 46 seconds into the quarter to put Brockport (0-1) on the board. After a Kyle Burton (Buffalo, NY/Amherst) cross-checking penalty put the Golden Eagles a man down, Andon-McLane scored to cut the Alfred lead to 3-2.
The teams traded goals for the remainder of the quarter and Alfred went into the halftime intermission with a 6-4 lead.
In the third quarter, Andon-McLane and McSweeney each scored a goal and Alfred added one for a 7-6 score entering the final quarter. McSweeney’s goal came on a man-up situation for Brockport with 3:54 to play in the third as he took a feed from Gomez for the goal.
In the fourth quarter, Alfred scored 29 seconds into the period for the 8-6 lead. Brockport controlled play for the remainder of the quarter with a 7-1 shots advantage but was limited to just a single goal when Brad Olzinski (Johnson City, NY/Union-Endicott) scored with 4:08 remaining to cut the lead to a single goal.
Andon-McLane and McSweeney each scored three goals while Olzinski added a single goal and Gomez was credited with three assists. Senior Garret Allwes (Amherst, NY/Amherst) made 10 saves for the Golden Eagles.
