Men’s Soccer Drops Conference Opener to Plattsburgh
Goalie Joe Marino scores for Brockport in a 4-1 loss
September 25, 2009
Junior goalie Joe Marino (Rochester, NY/McQuaid) scored on a long punt that bounced over the SUNY Plattsburgh goalie’s head but Plattsburgh scored four times, including three in the second half alone, to score a 4-1 victory over The College at Brockport Men’s Soccer team Friday afternoon in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game on A. Huntley Parker Jr. Field in Brockport.

Plattsburgh (6-1-1 overall, 1-0 SUNYAC) scored in the 32nd minute for a 1-0 lead and then made it a 2-0 game 38 seconds into the second half with a short chip pass over the defender’s head which left the Plattsburgh player alone with Marino less than 10 yards from the goal.

Four minutes later, Marino gathered in a loose ball in the 18-yard box and blasted a long punt that bounced outside the box at the opposite end of the field and continued over the Plattsburgh goalie’s head. The Cardinal goalie scrambled back toward the net but was unable to stop the ball before it settled in the goal.

The score remained 2-1 until the 75th minute when the Cardinals scored twice in less than a minute to open up a 4-1 lead.

Marino finished with nine saves as Plattsburgh outshot the Golden Eagles, 16-9.
