Senior Jamey Crumb (McGraw, NY/McGraw) scored with less than five minutes to play in the second half to break a scoreless tie and give The College at Brockport Men’s Soccer team a 1-0 victory over SUNY Fredonia in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game Friday afternoon on A. Huntley Parker Jr. Field in Brockport.

The victory for Brockport (8-4-2 overall, 6-2 SUNYAC) locked the Golden Eagles into at least second place in the conference standings giving Brockport a bye in the first round of the SUNYAC Tournament that begins Saturday, October 31. Brockport could still win the regular-season title with a SUNY Plattsburgh loss to SUNY Potsdam Saturday coupled with a Brockport win over Buffalo State in the last SUNYAC game of the season.

With less than five minutes to play in the second half, senior Steve Abgarian (Merrick, NY/Bellmore-JFK) sent a ball into the goal mouth where fellow senior Brad LeFort (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango) headed the ball back toward the middle of the box where Crumb sent a one-timer into the corner of the goal.

Each team had scoring chances in the final 15 minutes of the contest. Abgarian fired a hard shot streaking down the right side of the field that was saved by SUNY Fredonia goalie Thom Cavanaugh. One minute later, John Grabowski headed a ball from 10 yards out off a direct kick that was knocked away by Brockport goalie Joe Marino (Rochester, NY/McQuaid).

With 12 minutes to play, Abgarian had another scoring opportunity as he dribbled past two defenders and took a low shot on which Cavanaugh made a kick save.

Marino made six saves to record his fifth shutout of the season. Cavanaugh also made six saves in the Fredonia goal.
