Football Falls on Homecoming to Rowan
Golden Eagles battle back from 24-0 deficit but drop 37-20 decision to the Profs October 4, 2008
Cody Geffers led the Brockport defense against Rowan on Homecoming(credit: Neal Kemp) Senior Garet Lynch (Valley Stream, NY/Springfield Gardens) scored twice on a pair of 3-yard runs in the second half to help The College at Brockport Football team come back from a 24-0 halftime deficit, but Rowan University held on and scored 10 fourth quarter points to post a 37-20 New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) victory Saturday on Bob Boozer Field at Special Olympics Stadium in Brockport.
Rowan (3-1 overall, 2-1 NJAC) started early, scoring less than two minutes into the game and then added 17 points in the second quarter on two TD passes and a field goal for a 24-0 lead at the intermission. Brockport (1-3, 1-2) had a chance to score in the first quarter as senior quarterback Zack Luke (Cambridge, NY/Cambridge) engineered an 11-play drive with two completed passes and five Lynch runs moving the ball to the Rowan 20-yard line. After a Golden Eagle timeout, Brockport went for the 4th-and-5 with 1:13 to play in the quarter but an incomplete pass intended for Felipe Diaz (Syracuse, NY/Onondaga) ended the scoring threat.
In the third quarter, sophomore Derek Austin (Cherry Creek, NY/Pine Valley) took the opening kickoff 51 yards all the way to the Rowan 40-yard line. Luke completed a 13-yard pass to Matt Newman (Unadilla, NY/Unatego) on a 3rd-and-10 for a first down. After a holding penalty negated a 12-yard Lynch run, Luke gained six yards after being flushed out of the pocket, but the senior was sacked on the next play, leaving a 3rd-and-23 from the Rowan 40. Lynch then caught his longest pass of the day, picking up 19 yards but leaving Brockport four yards shy of the first down marker. On fourth down, Brockport lined up the offense and Luke hit Diaz on a crossing pattern. The junior wide receiver broke a couple of tackles and dove into the endzone for a 21-yard TD reception.
Rowan answered with a 22-yard field goal following a Brockport defensive stand which held the Profs out of the end zone on three first-and-goal plays starting at the Brockport 10-yard line.
The teams traded possessions with Rowan’s drive ending on a failed fourth-down conversion from the Brockport 24 with four minutes left in the third quarter. Luke conntected on four first-down passes, the big one coming on a 23-yard completion to freshman Tamere Shannon (Buffalo, NY/McKinley) on a 4th-and-14 play. On the first play of the fourth quarter, Lynch plowed into the end zone from three yards out to cut the lead to 27-14. The drive lasted over four minutes and used 13 plays.
After another Rowan field goal, this time a 28-yarder, Brockport marched down the field with Luke connecting on 3-of-4 passes for 56 yards, and Lynch did the rest with two runs from eight yards out for his second touchdown of the day to again cut into the Rowan lead. The Golden Eagles' deficit was down to 10 at 30-20 with 8:43 to play in the game.
The Profs scored on a 24-yard TD pass on their next possession to stretch the lead back to 17 points at 37-20.
Luke was intercepted on the first play of the ensuing Brockport drive but the Golden Eagles still had a chance as the defense forced a 4th-and-1 after two Rowan rushing attempts resulted in no gain. Faced with the 4th-and-1, Rowan called on quarterback Frank Wilczynski, who plunged ahead for one yard and a first down with less than three minutes to play. Brockport did get the ball back with 1:34 to play but was unable to move the ball. After giving up the ball on downs, Rowan took a knee on the final two plays of the game.
Lynch finished with 48 yards rushing and 48 yards receiving while Luke was 16-for-34 for 239 yards through the air. Austin had three kickoff returns for 109 yards. Defensively, Brockport had five players with at least 10 tackles as Nick Duchscherer (Youngstown, NY/Lewiston-Porter) leading the way with 13 stops, followed by Josh Day (Hornell, NY/Hornell) with 11 and Neil Fay (Olean, NY/Olean), Garrett Axtell (Windsor, NY/Windsor) and Jarrett Woodfork (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Ludden) each recording 10 tackles.
