The College at Brockport men’s soccer team claimed its first State University of New York Athletic Conference men's soccer championship since 1978 by virtue of winning a penalty-kick shootout, 11-10, over host Plattsburgh State on Saturday at the Cardinals Field House Complex.

The top two seeded teams battled to an official scoreless tie after two overtimes, but the Golden Eagles (10-5-3) earn the SUNYAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament. Brockport last appeared in the NCAA Tournament in 2005 after earning an at-large bid and was eliminated in the second round.

SUNYAC tournament most valuable player Joe Marino (Rochester, NY/McQuaid) made nine saves to keep the game scoreless, including a big save on the deciding penalty kick in the shootout. Brad LeFort (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango), Mike Breman (Merrick, NY/Bellmore-JFK) and Jeff Palumbo (Rochester, NY/Greece Arcadia )were each named to the All-tournament team.

Plattsburgh outshot Brockport, 19-6, including advantages of 10-2 in the second half and 3-1 in both 10-minute overtimes but the Golden Eagle defensive unit held strong.

Brockport's two best scoring chances came off a flick header by Brad Lefort and a scramble in front of the Plattsburgh goal after a corner kick.

In the shootout, Plattsburgh led 2-1 before Breman netted his attempt and the Cardinals missed for an even 2-2. Adam Rowell made his next shot to give the Golden Eagles the 3-2 lead before Plattsburgh shot and the attempt was saved by Marino. However the shot was called back by the official stating that Marino jumped early and gave the Cardinals a re-kick. Plattsburgh made the attempt and the two teams battled back and forth until the 14th kick. Breman again made his shot and put the Golden Eagles up, 11-10, forcing Plattsburgh to make its attempt. The Cardinal shot attempt was saved by Marino, giving Brockport the conference title.

Brockport will now wait to see who they will face in the NCAA Tournament field of 59 teams.
