Freshman Wrestlers Place at Eastern Michigan Open
Four Brockport newcomers finish among top six in Division I tournament
November 7, 2009
Freshman Clay Neivert (Ossining, NY/Ossining) won three matches, including one with a pin in just 15 seconds, and finished second at 174 pounds for The College at Brockport Wrestling team at the Eastern Michigan University Open Tournament Saturday in Ypsilanti, Michigan.

Neivert was one of four freshman wrestlers for the Golden Eagles that placed in the freshman/sophomore portion of the open tournament against a largely NCAA Division I field of wrestlers.

Neivert pinned his first opponent from Oakland (MI) University just 15 seconds into the opening period and recorded a pin in his second match as well over an unattached wrestler in 2:46. A 9-6 decision in the semifinals put him in the championship match where he dropped a 7-1 decision to a wrestler from Ohio State.

Two wrestlers finished fourth in their weight classes as Luke Pariso (Darien, NY/Attica) and Pat Krenz (Palmyra, NY/Palmyra-Macedon) each advanced to the consolation bracket championship match. Pariso, wrestling at 184 pounds, won his first three matches with victories over wrestlers from Ashland University, Cleveland State and Findlay University before dropping to the consolation bracket with a loss to an Eastern Michigan University wrestler by a 4-1 score. In the consolation bracket third-place match, Pariso dropped a close 3-1 decision to a Central Michigan University wrestler.

Krenz won his first two bouts with a pin over a wrestler from Mott Community College and a 5-1 decision over a Purdue University wrestler. After a 6-3 loss to Michigan, Krenze rebounded to defeat an Indiana University wrestler by a 7-5 score before falling by a 9-2 score in the third-place match to a wrestler from Purdue.

Freshman John Gochenour (Galway, NY/Galway) wrestled his way to a sixth-place finish with a pair of victories including a pin in 1:48 over a Michigan wrestler in the first round.
