Brockport Wrestling to Host 11th Annual Oklahoma Gold Tournament

Teams entered in this year's tournament include Oklahoma University, Rutgers University, The Ohio State University, Edinboro University, Kent State, Army, University of Buffalo and Liberty University as well as The College at Brockport.
All of the teams with the exception of Brockport compete at the NCAA Division I level and all eight teams qualified for the NCAA Division I Championship Tournament in 2009. Ohio State was the national runner-up in the tournament, finishing just 3 ½ points behind Iowa for the NCAA title.
Edinboro finished 6th, Kent State captured 18th and Oklahoma finished 31st. Buffalo and Rutgers were tied for 48th position, Army was 50th overall and Liberty took 58th place in the 76-team championship tournament.
The 11th annual tournament will feature several preseason Division I ranked wrestlers with 19 individual wrestlers from the competing schools having finished in the top-20 rankings for the individual weight classes last season.
The tournament also will be a homecoming of sorts for several former Section V wrestling stars. Section V’s only four-time New York State champion Alex Ekstron (Palmyra-Macedon) and three-time New York State champ Ian Paddock (Warsaw) are incoming freshman at Oklahoma and Ohio State, respectively. Other Section V alums include Torsten Gillespie (Jr., Webster Schroeder) and Paul Paddock (So., Warsaw) from Edinboro, and John-Martin Cannon (So., Brockport) and Desmond Green (So., Rush-Henrietta) from University of Buffalo.
Wrestling is scheduled to begin at 10 am and will run continuous to the end of the championship matches.
