Jesse Doty, a 2003 All-American hammer thrower for The College at Brockport and an assistant coach with the Golden Eagles Track and Field teams, finished 13th in the preliminary competition for the hammer throw in Eugene, Oregon. Only the top 12 finishers in the preliminaries advance to the finals on July 4.

Doty had his best throw on his second attempt with a 67.42 meter (221 feet, 2 inches) heave after fouling on his first attempt. The throw put him in 11th position after the second of three throws in the preliminary competition. Two throwers moved past Doty on their final throw bumping him to 13th position and out of the Olympic Trials.
