Head Coach: John Dumaw
John Dumaw, who has been involved in fastpitch softball for more than 35 years, completed his 10th season as The College at Brockport’s softball coach in 2008. In his first 10 years at Brockport, his teams have compiled a 225-147 record for a .605 winning percentage.
The 2008 season culminated with a trip to the semifinal round of the State University of new York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament and a 24-14 record. The 24-win season was the fifth straight 20-win season for the Golden Eagles under Dumaw and the eighth in the last nine years under the direction of the veteran coach. In 2008, Courtney Turchan was named the SUNYAC Player of the Year and was also a NFCA First-Team All-Region selection.
In 2007, Dumaw won his 200th career game with the Golden Eagles and led the team to the SUNYAC Tournament for the eighth time since 1999. The team set a school record with 49 home runs in the season and ranked among the top five teams in the country with 1.26 home runs per game.
In 2006, he guided the Golden Eagles to a 20-win season (26-14) for the sixth time in his eight seasons.
In 2005, Dumaw guided the Golden Eagles to their first 8-0 start since the 1993 SUNYAC championship season, and at least one victory over every team in the conference except for eventual-champion Cortland.
In 2004, Kristin Whittaker was the star of what was otherwise a very trying season that saw graduations and season ending injuries to no less than six potential starting players. Whittaker became just the fifth player to bat at least .400 since the 2000 season, hitting an even .400 for the 31-game season. She led the team with 38 hits and also starred in the classroom, as she was named an NFCA Academic All-American for the second consecutive year.
The 2003 team was led by All-American Kim Comtois, who was also named the SUNYAC Player of the Year, as she led the team to a 25-11 record and a second-place finish in the ECAC Upstate NY Tournament.
The 2002 squad won a pair of games at the SUNYAC tournament to reach the semifinals, and earned the ECAC Upstate tournament championship.
In 2001, Brockport finished 30-15, setting a new school record for most wins in a season. The Golden Eagles lost in the semifinals of the SUNYAC Championship to Cortland State, and also finished as runners-up in the 2001 ECAC Tournament.
Dumaw compiled an incredible record of 1,136 wins and 208 losses as a pitcher in men’s major fastpitch for more than 30 years. Dumaw’s lifetime sanctioned stats include 122 no-hitters and 24 perfect games. His career culminated with his election to the New York State Amateur Softball Association (NYSASA) Hall of Fame in (1990) and the USISA National Hall of Fame in (1993). His extensive coaching career includes stints at Gates-Chili High School and Rochester Institute of Technology.
Dumaw served one season (1998) as assistant at Brockport before being appointed head coach. He was also coach of the highly-successful Rochester Rebels 18 and under Junior Olympic team for four seasons compiling a record of 209 and 36 with 14 tournament titles and a third-place finish in the 1996 World Tournament.
A pitching expert, Dumaw continues to be involved with a number of clinics and camps every year. Dumaw is a 1965 graduate of Mohawk Valley Institute of Technology and a 2003 graduate of The College at Brockport. Coach Dumaw lectures in the Department of Physical Education and Sport and assumes other duties as assigned by the Athletic department.
