Senior Lindsay Szymanski (Cheektowaga, NY/John F. Kennedy) hit a solo home run in the top of the ninth inning to propel The College at Brockport Softball team to a 1-0 victory over the University of Rochester as the Golden Eagles split a non-league doubleheader with the Yellowjackets Saturday in Rochester. Rochester recovered to win game two, 5-0, to salvage the split.

Brockport (20-5-1) played a scoreless eight innings before Szymanski connected on her solo home run with one out in the ninth. Sophomore Stephanie Geer (Binghamton, NY/Seton Catholic) completed the shutout victory as she struck out eight batters and scattered eight hits. Rochester (18-9) had its best chance to score in the eighth. After a pair of singles put two runners on base, Brittany Celeste singled to center field but Nikki Odrobina (Depew, NY/Maryvale) gathered the hit and threw home and Szymanski applied the tag on a play at the plate for the final out of the inning.

In game two, Rochester limited the Golden Eagles hitters to three hits and scored four of its runs on a grand slam in the third inning. Brockport had a good chance to score in the first inning when Rachel Maxon (Kendall, NY/Kendall) reached on an error. Tarah Wetherby (Olean, NY/Olean) reached on a fielders’ choice as Maxon was forced out at second base and Ona Halladay (Palmyra, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) singled advancing Wetherby to second. Szymanski hit a hard ground ball to third and Wetherby was forced out on the play.

The Golden Eagles also had a pair of runners on base in the sixth with no outs but a strikeout, an infield pop out and a groundout ended the threat.
