Melissa Boyle Hits Two Home Runs in Softball Split
Golden Eagles drop game one and rebound for a 10-2 win in the nightcap April 14, 2009
Melissa Boyle hits a pair of home runs to lead the Golden Eagles Sophomore Melissa Boyle (State Island, NY/Moore Catholic) hit a home run in each game and senior Lindsay Szymanski (Cheektowaga, NY/John F. Kennedy) had four hits on the day to lead The College at Brockport Softball team to a doubleheader split against SUNY Geneseo Tuesday in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) matchup in Geneseo. The Knights won the opener, 4-2, and the Golden Eagles rebounded for a 10-2 victory in game two.
Brockport (21-6-1 overall, 10-2 SUNYAC) surrendered two runs in the first inning of the opener as Geneseo (12-12, 8-4) connected on three hits and a fielding error in the first four batters of the inning to post the early lead. Brockport answered in the fourth with a pair of runs on a Boyle two-run home run to tie the game. The Knights scored two more in the fifth with a two-out, two-run double for the final score.
After a scoreless first inning in game two, Brockport posted runs in each inning for the remainder of the game, including four in the top of the sixth, to make it a 10-0 Golden Eagle lead. Geneseo scored twice in the bottom of the sixth but the game was ended due to the eight-run rule after six complete innings.
The Golden Eagles nearly broke the game open in the second inning when Rachel Maxon (Kendall, NY/Kendall) connected on a bases-loaded single scoring the first run of the game. Two batters later, Ona Halladay (Palmyra, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) reached on a fielding error pushing home the second run but Geneseo recorded the final out with the bases loaded.
Brockport added a single run in the third and fifth innings and two more in the fourth for a 6-0 lead heading into the sixth inning. Halladay opened the inning with a walk followed by a Szymanski single before Boyle came to the plate and connected on her second home run of the day. Kelly Briscoe (Styvesant, NY/Ichabod Crane) later singled and scored on a fielding error for the final run of the inning. Geneseo scored twice in the bottom half of the inning and left the bases loaded when the final out of the game was recorded.
Szymanski was 2-for-3 in each game while both Maxon and Becca Pringle (Sanborn, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) had two hits in game two. Maxon and Szymanski each had two runs batted in while Boyle finished with five RBI.
