Stephanie Geer No-Hitter Highlights Softball Split
Golden Eagles reach 25-win plateau with win over Plattsburgh April 19, 2009
Stephanie Geer throws her second career no-hitter Sophomore Stephanie Geer (Binghamton, NY/Seton Catholic) struck out eight batters and allowed just one runner on base as she tossed her second career no-hitter as The College at Brockport Softball team defeated SUNY Plattsburgh, 1-0, in the first game of a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader Sunday at the Clark V. Whited Sports Complex in Brockport. The Golden Eagles split the doubleheader as Plattsburgh rebounded for a 4-2 victory in the nightcap.
Geer had her second no-hitter after tossing a perfect game last season against SUNY New Paltz.
Brockport (25-8-1 overall, 14-4 SUNYAC) scored the only run of the game in the sixth inning as the Golden Eagles opened the inning with singles by Ona Halladay (Palmyra, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) and Lindsay Szymanski (Cheektowaga, NY/John F. Kennedy). Amanda Smith (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) was inserted as a pinch runner but was forced out at third base after a single by Melissa Boyle (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic). The Golden Eagles loaded the bases with a walk to Kim Gabor (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale). Hollie Ary (Copake, NY/Taconic Hills) drove in the only run of the game with a sacrifice fly to right field scoring Szymanski from third base.
The leadoff walk in the fourth inning was the only blemish on the stats line for Geer but Szymanski eliminated the threat by throwing out the runner in a stolen base attempt. Only two Plattsburgh batters were able to get the ball out of the infield with two fly outs while the remainder of the batters either struck out or were retired by infielders. Geer faced the minimum 21 batters in the win, her 12th of the season.
In game two, Plattsburgh (17-19, 10-6) took a 2-0 lead in the third inning with one run scoring when the Cardinals stole home after Amy Woo was walked and drew a throw as she advanced to second base on the play. The relay throw to the plate was late allowing the run to score. The next batter doubled home Woo for the 2-0 lead.
Brockport closed the gap to 2-1 in the fourth inning when Boyle opened the inning with an infield single and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Kelly Briscoe (Stuyvesant, NY/Ichabod Crane) put down a successful sacrifice bunt moving Boyle to third. Freshman Becca Pringle (Sanborn, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) singled to left field to score Boyle.
Plattsburgh added a run in the fifth with a two-out single up the middle to score a runner from second for a 3-1 lead. After two outs in the sixth inning, Plattsburgh made it a 4-1 lead with a single followed by a stolen base and an interference call advancing the runner to third. An infield error allowed the runner to score from third.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Szymanski hit a home run to left field to lead off the inning but the Golden Eagles were unable to score another run and Plattsburgh held on for the 4-2 win.
Boyle finished the day with four hits in going 4-for-5 while Szymanski added a hit in each game.
