Kennedy) and Rachel Maxon (Kendall, NY/Kendall) and sophomore Melissa Boyle (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) each had three hits as The College at Brockport Softball team split a doubleheader with Buffalo State Friday to clinch second place in the final State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) standings. The Golden Eagles dropped a 5-1 decision in the opener and rebounded with a 4-2 win in game two.
Brockport (26-9-1 overall, 15-5 SUNYAC) took a 1-0 lead in the opener with a single run in the fourth inning when Szymanski singled to start the inning and came home three batters later on a single by Becca Pringle (Sanborn, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield). Buffalo State (22-10, 13-5) struck back with three runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth for the victory.
In game two, Brockport struck early with four runs in the first inning. Maxon opened the game with a single and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Ona Halladay (Palmyra, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) before Szymanski hit a solo home run to give Brockport a 2-0 lead. The next four batters all singled with Boyle, Pringle and Kim Gabor (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) each hitting singles, followed by Kelly Briscoe (Stuyvesant, NY/Ichabod Crane) who singled to score Pringle for a 4-0 lead.
Briscoe limited the Bengals to four hits and Buffalo State scored twice in the third inning but could get no closer as Brockport clinched the No. 2 spot in the upcoming SUNYAC Tournament that will be played in Cortland starting Thursday.
With the two games played and the three total bases for Maxon, the senior ties the career school records in both categories. She is now the career record-holder in games played, at bats, runs scored, doubles, runs batted in and walks. She is also two hits away from the career record, as well as three triples and three home runs from the all-time marks.
