Brockport (27-9-1) advanced to the second round of the winner’s bracket of the tournament and will face Buffalo State at 11 am Friday. The Bengals won their first game with a 3-2 victory over SUNY Geneseo.
Against Plattsburgh (19-22), Brockport fell behind in the second inning as the Cardinals scratched out a run with an infield single and a close call at first base, allowing the Cardinals to take a 1-0 lead.
In the third inning, Plattsburgh took a 2-0 lead when the leadoff batter doubled and after one out, stole third and scored on a throwing error by the catcher.
Brockport broke onto the scoreboard in the fourth inning. Ona Halladay (Palmyra, NY/Mercy) singled to open the inning and, after one out, Boyle singled to put runners on first and second. Following the second out of the inning, freshman Becca Pringle (Sanborn, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) singled to score Halladay from second.
The Golden Eagles completed the comeback in the fifth when Rachel Maxon (Kendall, NY/Kendall) hit a one-out triple down the right field line and, after Halladay was intentionally walked, Szymanski drilled a double to left centerfield to plate Maxon and push Halladay to third. Boyle followed with a hard hit to the right of the shortstop for a single but the late throw sailed past the first baseman allowing both Halladay and Szymanski to score for the 4-2 lead.
Starting pitcher Stephanie Geer (Binghamton, NY/Seton Catholic) allowed just one hit in the final four innings and retired 12 of the final 13 batters in the game for her 13th victory of the season. She finished with five strikeouts. Halladay finished 2-for-2 while Boyle and Pringle had two hits each.
